Job description

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is located within the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies with its primary departmental faculty, staff, and administrative offices based on GVSU’s Allendale Campus in Lake Ontario Hall. SIS is hiring two Affiliate Faculty of Instruction positions on 9-month, full-time, academic year positions to be housed within SIS. Normal teaching load is 24-credits/year.
It is expected that these Affiliate Faculty members will teach in more than one of the programs (majors, minors, certificates, and badges) within SIS. Programs in SIS include:
  • African and African American Studies (AAA)
  • Bachelor of Applied Sciences (BAS)
  • Digital Studies (DS)
  • Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ENS)
  • Global Studies & Social Impact (GSI)
  • Human Rights (HRT)
  • Integrative Studies (INT)
  • Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS)
  • Intercultural Competence and Communication (ITC)
  • Latino/a & Latin American Studies (LAS)
  • Middle East Studies (MES)
  • Religious Studies (REL)
  • University Studies (US)
  • Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS)
Candidates for this position must also be effective at online, asynchronous teaching. Faculty members in SIS are also expected to participate in regular professional development activities that support their teaching, regularly participate in department meetings, and be in ongoing communication with the program directors and SIS director and assistant director.
Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise at the undergraduate level;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach online and/or hybrid courses;
  • Experience working with and understanding of underrepresented and diverse populations;
  • Commitment to serving diverse communities of learners, collaborating with diverse colleagues whose expertise spans disciplinary and geographic boundaries, the General Education Program, and Center for Adult and Continuing Studies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborating with colleagues – both faculty and staff – including ability to work well as a team with both faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while remaining in active touch with collaborators and supervisors;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Completed at least a master’s degree in a relevant field by time of application;
  • Academic qualifications in fields of greatest teaching need in order to serve the department’s growing academic programs;
  • Strong organizational skills that span both administrative and teaching-focused work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of a liberal education;
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach a range of core courses within two or more of the School’s academic programs. Particular areas of need include the REL, WGS, INT, ENS, and DS programs. (Courses include REL 100: Religions of the world, REL 200: Understanding Religions in Human Experience, WGS 101: Intro to Gender Studies, WGS 224: Intro to LGBTQ Studies, WGS 225: Gender and Popular Culture, INT 100: Reflect, Connect, Engage, INT 201: Diversity in the US, INT 314: Life Journeys, ENS 201: Introduction to Environmental and Sustainability Studies, DS 101: Digital Identities and Communities, and DS 202: Digital Data and Design, among others.)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in working with adult learners;
  • Academic training in adult learner pedagogies;
  • Experience with integrative and community-based learning in a higher education context;
  • Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students;
  • Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate internships, practicum, and/or community-based research;
  • Strong community ties in communities served by Grand Valley State University; and
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in accelerated formats.
