The Chief of Staff | Public Information Officer works with the Board of Trustees, President, and Strategic Leadership Team on a wide variety of strategic institutional priorities related to executive-level action items. The Chief of Staff | PIO will work under the direction of the College President and serve as a member of the College Strategic Leadership Team. The Chief of Staff | PIO advises the President and Strategic Leadership Team on the District policy, procedural, and operational issues, participating in key stakeholder meetings to ensure appropriate and responsive follow-up and accountability across the College. The Chief of Staff | PIO facilitates the resolution of both internal and external matters requiring the President’s attention. The Chief of Staff | PIO is responsible for managing information and disseminating it to the media, public, incident personnel, and other organizations. The Chief of Staff | PIO acts on behalf of the College to ensure seamless, timely, and transparent information flow.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative Leadership

  • Lead the operationalization of strategic initiatives for the President and the Strategic Leadership Team.
  • Coordinate resources for cross-functional Advance teams, developing team charters, timelines, and expectations, and monitoring their work. Train Advance team leaders and facilitate the kickoff of new Advance teams.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the Horizons 2025 College planning initiative.
  • Gather information and prepare agendas for addressing issues related to executive-level operations.
  • Work closely with the Strategic Leadership Team to facilitate communication and ensure the implementation of projects in a timely manner.
  • Oversee assigned budgetary functions and approve expenditures.
  • Public Information Officer & Internal Communications
  • Serve as the College Public Information Officer and work with media to respond to inquiries.
  • Assist College employees in the preparation of announcements and Public Information materials.
  • Maintain contact with the Strategic Leadership Team in matters relating to news media, public statements, crisis communications, and public relations activities, and represent College leadership to the news media.
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of the President’s strategic communications plan.
  • Coordinate official presidential communications, including newsletters, Campus Sync, correspondence, social media, and other public communications. Work with various College teams to source information and data and devise communications strategies that support College goals.
  • Use independent analysis and judgment in assessing the urgency of problems and questions from College departments, students, and the public. Coordinate presidential responses, monitor projects, and solve problems as they arise.
  • Prepare presentations for keynote speeches, official welcomes, and ceremonial appearances.
  • Community and Campus Liaison
  • Work with WTCS officials, the general public, and employees on the President's behalf to gather information, solve problems, and interpret policies and rules where appropriate.
  • Serve as the President’s designee in meetings and public appearances when requested.
  • Facilitate the strategic selection of employees serving as the College’s official representatives to community organizations and programs.
  • Ensure that matters requiring the attention of the President are thoroughly researched and evaluated; ensure that the President is fully prepared for meetings with stakeholders, committees, and boards.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Business, Organizational Development, English, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in related field.
  • Five or more years of progressive communications and public speaking experience.
  • Five or more years of strategic planning or project management experience.
  • Five or more years of progressive administrative experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the administrative, financial, and academic structure and organization of higher education.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation, motivated to work with constituents to answer questions and address needs or concerns.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret different types of data and information and to produce reports, summaries, and presentations based on research.
  • Ability to function within a complex system to achieve campus-wide goals while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with board members, employees, students, and a variety of diverse constituents.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive or legally protected information.

  • The employee will be frequently required to stand, walk, touch/handle/grasp (using hands and fingers), and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must occasionally bend or squat and lift and/or push up to 10 pounds of general office items.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, far, and field of vision.

    The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Includes a comprehensive benefits package.
