REASON TO SERVE ON SCHOOL BOARD 

Local school boards are a uniquely American institution and at the heart of this country's public education system. A board's existence is based on the belief that lay control of public education makes schools flexible and responsive to the needs of the local community.

 

The Administrative Unit of Frontier Academy is the Executive Committee/Board, which is responsible for governing Frontier Academy (K-12). Its attention is necessarily directed to planning, evaluating, and policy-making.  Their responsibilities cover many phases of the school program including employees, students, curriculum, finance and facilities.  The Executive Committee is an eleven member group, made up of parents/guardians of students, community members and staff.

 

Serving as a Board member is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs you will ever undertake. It also is an enormous responsibility. As a board member, the decisions you make will affect children and their parents, the livelihood of school employees and the economic well-being of the community. Service to a board requires time, energy, a willingness to learn about issues affecting your school, and a passion for a public Charter school education system committed to providing the best and most appropriate education for all children entrusted to its care.

 

To determine whether being a school board member is right for you, you'll want to consider the personal attributes needed to be an effective board member, and understand the responsibilities and duties of the position.

  CHARACTERISTICS OF AN EFFECTIVE BOARD MEMBER 

• Passionate, unwavering belief in Frontier Academy's mission and core values
• Clarity of collective vision-where the school is and where it wants to be in the future
• Focus on results
• A strong partnership between the Board and the Administration which is built on mutual trust and respect
• An understanding of Frontier's Charter (Copies of Charter can be obtained through Frontier's Business Manager at 330-1780).

  THIS POSITION REQUIRES DEDICATION TO OUR SCHOOL BY: 

• Attending one Board meeting a month (the 1st Thursday of each month), which is approximately four hours in duration, and occasionally special Board meetings.
• Being accessible for personal contact in between board meetings.
• Providing leadership to board committees. Each board member is expected to serve as an active, ongoing member of at least one sub-committee. This requires a number of meetings per year plus individual committee task completion time.
• Responsibly reviewing and acting upon committee recommendations brought to the board for action.
• Preparing in advance for decision-making and policy formation at board meetings; taking responsibility for self-education on the major issues before the board.
• A 6-8 hour per month time commitment

 

Immediate family members of faculty/staff may not be candidates for the Frontier Academy Executive Committee Board.
