Description:

The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program at Penn Graduate School of Education is an in-service teacher education program that offers students the ability to earn a master’s degree and/or teaching certification while working full-time. UTR is organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning.

 

UTR seeks an instructor who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring that enhances the work of the program and attracts and retains a diverse student body. We are seeking an instructor for Foundations of Special Education (see the course description below).

 

Foundations of Special Education (Virtual, Fall 2024): This course provides students who are working towards certification in general education with knowledge of problem solving strategies, teaching techniques, and team and community building approaches for use in the general education classroom when working with students who are eligible for Individualized Education Programming (IEPs) under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). Students learn what constitutes disabilities in this population and issues surrounding providing this population with an effective education. Students will explore the ramifications, jargon, specific goals and objectives included with implementing an IEP in an inclusive general education environment. Students will discuss the appropriateness of various academic environments as children with disabilities progress from elementary to secondary education and transition into adulthood. General issues surrounding the topic of inclusion and the least restrictive environment will be addressed. In addition, time will be spent in this course discussing the education of students who are English Language Learners from the standpoint of sheltered instruction and the use of WIDA lesson planning.

 

Responsibilities:

● Design course syllabus, assignments, lessons, and activities to meet course and program goals

● Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students

● Assess student progress and provide timely and constructive feedback

● Collaborate with other instructors and program leadership to ensure a cohesive learning experience

● Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance

● Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and program leaders


Qualifications:

Qualifications:

● Master's degree (required)

● Previous K-12 teaching experience is required (experience teaching in urban schools preferred)

● Previous undergraduate or graduate level teaching is required (experience teaching comparable courses is preferred)

● Knowledge of subject matter

● Commitment to UTR’s mission to promote anti-racist and social justice oriented teaching and learning grounded in an asset-based approach to local communities and stakeholders

● Strong communication and interpersonal skills

● Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners
