The Position
This recruitment is open to permanent AUHSD employees only.
BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in the ordering and distribution of food items from the central kitchen; provide guidance and assist in the preparation of food items for distribution at the central kitchen or junior high school and high school sites; train and provide work direction to others; assist kitchen manager with required paperwork; maintain the kitchen and food service areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition; operate a computerized cash management system.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in the Food Service Assistant II classification perform more responsible food service at the District Food Center, or serve as second-in-command at District junior high school and high school sites. The Food Service Assistant III are the lead worker assigned to the elementary schools, and are assigned as floaters from the District Food Center. Food Service Assistant IV's are the advanced journey-level specialist classification in the series. The Food Service Assistant I is the entry-level classification and performs basic and routine food service preparation and serving activities at an assigned site.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
One year experience in the operation of school cafeterias and preparing and serving food.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
A valid, accredited, Food Safety Manager Certificate or equivalent (e.g. ServeSafe, Prometric, etc.) is strongly preferred.
Incumbents may be required to have a valid California driver's license.
Incumbents may be required to possess proof of current California auto liability insurance at time of appointment, and throughout employment in a position in this classification.
Incumbents may be required to provide personal transportation for job-related travel throughout the District.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Nutritional requirements of school-aged children.
Sanitation practices related to preparing, handling and serving food.
Basic math and cashiering skills.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Operation of food service equipment and computerized cash management system.
Rules and regulations pertaining to health and safety in the cafeteria.

Storage and rotation of perishable food.
Basic food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food items and ingredients.

Wash, cut, slice, grate, mix and assemble food items and ingredients.

Learn, interpret, apply and explain policies, procedures, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Standing for extended periods of time.
Lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted, up to 50 pounds with assistance.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES
ASSIGNMENTS IN ALL SERVING KITCHENS INCLUDE:
Heat and serve hot and cold menu items to students and staff; assure proper temperature of foods; assure compliance with safety and sanitation regulations. E
Set-up, count, stock and serve food service items; check expiration dates and discard containers as needed. E
Collect monies, enters data into sales record keeping equipment and make change. E
Count money collected and prepare cash report. E
Monitor the behavior of students utilizing the cafeteria; train new food service employees and student workers as assigned.
Estimate food and supplies needed for operation; prepare and maintain records and reports including free and reduced lunch eligibility. E

ASSIGNMENTS IN THE DISTRICT FOOD CENTER INCLUDE:
Provide guidance and assist in the preparation of food items on an assigned production division of the central kitchen. E
Set-up, count and stock food service items; check expiration dates and discard containers as needed; package food for distribution to various District sites. E
ALL ASSIGNMENTS WILL INCLUDE:
Clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers and other food service equipment and areas; assist with washing and drying dishes and utensils as needed. E
Perform general cleaning duties such as keeping kitchen and cafeteria floors clean and safe, emptying trash receptacles, refilling supply of paper towels and cleaning fluids as needed. E
Stock food supplies according to established procedures; assist with the storage of food supplies and leftover items; maintain related records. E
Operate a variety of equipment and machines used in a school cafeteria or central kitchen; assure proper operation of preparation lines and related equipment; make general repairs as necessary. E
Assist with food preparation and service at special events as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Recruitment Information
RECRUITMENT TYPE: PROMOTIONAL - Only current employees may apply.
CERTIFICATION TYPE: PROMOTIONAL - Qualified candidates, or Eligibles, who pass all testing stages will be placed on one eligibility list. The top 3 ranks of Eligibles will be certified for a hiring interview.

SCREENING PROCESS
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION

Requests must be signed by your medical doctor, school psychologist, or learning consultant as appropriate and must be on provider letterhead and contain an actual signature.
EXAM PROTESTS
Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.
ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list created from this recruitment will expire after three (3) months, or may be extended for up to one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.
OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT
Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT
All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from Human Resources. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria:
A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.
B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.
C) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.

-Retirement: Classified employees are members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employee contribution is 7% of gross earnings.
