Job description

The Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our Food Services Team as Food Services Manager. The Food Services Manager performs intermediate semiskilled and administrative work planning, coordinating, assigning, overseeing the preparation, cooking, serving, cleaning, and storing of food, preparing and maintaining necessary records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant Operations Director. General supervision is exercised over Head Cooks and Food Service staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 
  • Performs strategic planning for the Food Services department, including marketing, establishing meal programs, service and staffing levels, and pricing to ensure a positive Food Service fund balance.
  • Manages Food Service budget, approving purchases and coding expenditures.
  • Directs nutrition and menu planning, ensuring that food items are served in quantities according to good dietary principles and determines the quantities of each food to be prepared.
  • Assigns, directs, trains, and rewards staff work; evaluates performance; develops staff schedules; provides staff coaching and/or counseling; hires, evaluates, and disciplines staff; provides recommendations for transferring, promoting, suspending, demoting, and terminating employees.
  • Supervises, supports, trains, and evaluates staff performance.
  • Ensures staff are responsive to educational programming needs and support the mission of the school district.
  • Monitors child nutrition federal/ state regulations and local health department rules to ensure compliance.
  • Ensures all cleanliness and safety standards are adhered to.
  • Organizes, directs and administers federally funded school meal programs, including applications, agreements and contracts, state and federal reimbursement claims, local, state, and federal regulations, federally donated food, and free and reduced meal program.
  • Orders receives, accounts for, and stocks food and supplies; maintains inventory, cost, and food consumption records; verifies, codes, and files invoices.
  • Research products, equipment, and procedures to increase efficiencies or lower costs, or improve services provided by the department.
  • Effectively identify and implement energy efficiency projects, sustainability initiatives, and waste and water reduction efforts.
  • Assists in the development of specifications and work with vendors to help bid or quote new equipment. Develops and maintains good working relationships with a variety of vendors to ensure quality products and services are used in the maintenance department.
  • Oversees the preparation and development of a variety of mandated plans, studies, and reports prepared internally or by retained consultants (e.g., environmental impact report, project applications with the State and local agencies, etc.) for the purpose of complying with regulatory actions, funding requirements, and other established policies.
  • Oversees and coordinates the maintenance of equipment, utensils, and working areas.
  • Determines training needs, coordinates and oversees the scheduling and approval of training sessions, workshops and seminars as needed.
  • Handles kitchen and cafeteria emergencies, including equipment failure, repair and service calls, etc.; documents issues and corrective action is taken.
  • Responds to emergency calls after hours or on weekends when needed.
  • Ensures employees are updated regarding food and nutrition services operational changes.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and BCCS information.
  • Handles catering and special event orders; processes bills and payments.
  • Works collaboratively with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments.
  • Consults with the fire marshals, OSHA representatives, insurance company inspectors, County Health Department staff, Department of Education, or other regulatory agencies.
  •  Meets and communicates with Licensed School Nurse and parents of children with special dietary needs.
  • Other duties as apparent or assigned.
 


Knowledge,Skills and, Abilities Preferred: 

 
  • Thorough knowledge of the preparation, cooking and serving of food in large quantities.
  • Thorough knowledge of food quality and values and of nutritional and economic substitutions within food groups
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices used in ordering, receiving, and storing food in large quantities
  • Thorough knowledge of kitchen sanitation and safety measures used in food handling and in operation, cleaning, and care of utensils, equipment, and work areas
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S.D.A. rules and regulations; some knowledge of special dietary requirements
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google
  • General understanding of schools accounting procedures and UFARS codes
  • Good judgment and decision-making. Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/ Training
  • Previous experience in school foodservice management
 


 Qualifications: 

 
  • Previous experience in school Food Service management preferred
  • Required Education: Associates degree in: Business, FACS, Dietician, Food and Nutrition, or Culinary Arts. Bachelors degree preferred. 
  • LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification required, School Nutrition Association Certification, Level 3 preferred.
  • Minnesota School Nutrition Association training. Registered Dietician preferred-valid driver's license. Licenses must be kept current and valid.
