Department or School Site The LAUSD Food Services Division has been recognized as a national
leader in the effort to promote healthy food and lifestyle. Their mission is
to nourish students to achieve excellence. The Food Services Division is
responsible for operating the largest School Breakfast Program (SBP)
and the second largest National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in the
United States. This amounts to approximately 650,000 student meals

Job Duties/Responsibilities A Food Service Manager I operates a District cafeteria that has an
elementary school feeding program and/or is smaller than the typical
secondary school cafeteria. Typical duties performed by a Food Service
Manager I may include, but are not limited to:
- -Supervising and participating in the preparation, heating or cooking,
assembling, and serving of food for students and faculty.
- -Maintaining food quality standards, including appearance and taste.
- -Planning menus and following standardized recipes or procedures to
prepare or heat food and following approved price and portion
schedules.
- -Supervising Food Service personnel by setting up work schedules,
assigning and directing work, evaluating work performance, counseling,
recommending disciplinary action, and participating in on-the-job training
of Food Service personnel and student employees.
- -Ordering food and supplies and ensuring proper storage and use.

Minimum Requirements EDUCATION:
- -Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational
proficiency, AND
- -Evidence of successful completion of adult school, college-level, or
equivalent classes in supervision (*Note: SIX (6) months of experience
supervising, training, and evaluating the work performance of other food
service employees may be substituted for the supervision class
requirement mentioned above)
EXPERIENCE:
- -One year of experience in commercial or institutional quantity food
preparation, including the serving of a major meal component of at least
50 meals per day.
SPECIAL:
- -A valid “ServSafe Certificate”, National Registry certificate, or
- -A valid Los Angeles Unified School District Food Handler’s Health
- -A valid California Driver License and use of an automobile may be
required for some positions
- -Attendance in and successful completion of a two-week Food Services
Manager Certification Training Program is required prior to regular
assignment.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
- -Stand and walk on concrete and tile floors for long periods of time
- -Withstand a wide range of temperatures
- -Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
Desirable Qualifications An ideal candidate will have experience: planning balanced menus,
following safety procedures, and assisting staff; communicating
effectively in writing, operating office computer systems, and keeping
accurate records through the usage of arithmetic computations; handling
complaints and issues as they arise, in a thoughtful, cordial manner;
striving to meet the needs and expectations of customers and
employees; adjusting priorities to changing situations; considering
conflicting needs and options to reach a sound conclusion; has the ability
to understand the importance of attendance and the impact it has on the
LAUSD community; and developing and maintaining work relationships
to contribute to a positive work environment.
Employment Selection Process The employment selection process of this position tentatively consists of
the following: An application screening for the minimum qualifications, a
computer-based multiple-choice test, and an interview. Candidates who
meet the minimum qualifications screening and pass the multiple-choice
test will be invited to participate in the interview.
RETAKE POLICY: In accordance with our assessment retake policy,
applicants who have taken the Food Service Manager computerized
multiple-choice test during the last four (4) months will not be invited to
take it again. Instead, the previously obtained test scores will be certified
(applied) towards the Food Service Manager I. Candidates who take the
Food Service Manager computerized multiple-choice test more than
once within a period of four (4) months, will be disqualified from this
employment selection process and may not be eligible to take the
assessment for one year. Scores on this computerized multiple-choice
test may apply towards future assessments for other classifications
within the Food Service Manager series (Food Service Manager II, III, IV,
V, VI and VII) for which a person may apply.
Candidates who have previously take then computerized multiple-choice
and passed but were not successful on the technical interview will have
to wait 4 months from the date of technical interview to retest.

Selection and promotion are based on a competitive employment
