Location Description
The Lawrence, Kansas facility is 236,000 square feet and home to about 155 hard working team members who are proud to produce iconic pet food brands like Kibbles 'n Bits®. Lawrence is a college town and the home to both the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University with Kansas State University about 85 miles away. The city is known for a thriving music and art scene and is also the home of the University of Kansas athletic teams.
Responsibilities
The Food Safety Assistant Manager must possess technical aptitude as it relates to food plant sanitation programs, chemical handling, and Food Safety and quality programs. A general knowledge of food and environmental microbiological testing, as well as an understanding of preventative measures including sanitary design and master sanitation schedules, is required. The right candidate will partner with Operations Leaders to implement validated and sustainable sanitation systems while continuously looking for improvement opportunities. The chosen candidate will possess at least one year of direct leadership experience and have experience with sanitation in a food processing environment.
  • Implement and maintain sanitation programs, policies, plans, and processes to ensure facility, equipment, and grounds meet or exceed regulatory and corporate standards.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring program including trending of results and facilitating preventative and corrective action as necessary.
  • Lead cross-functional sanitation team by performing tasks including organizing sanitation work, providing sanitation and chemical safety training, and ensuring effectiveness of cleaning, among other related tasks.
  • Manage sanitation-related chemical and supply inventory for the facility.
  • Provide direction for janitorial staff activity.
  • Assist in annual sanitation master planning and budget forecasting.
  • Lead the Food Safety department in overseeing the following programs and/or areas of responsibility including, but not limited to, contractor relations, food defense, integrated pest management, internal auditing and inspections, purchasing, red tag program, temporary repair program, and departmental training.
  • Communicate issues and potential issues to management and make recommendations regarding equipment, plant layout, air flow, lighting, or work practices that may improve sanitation standards.
  • Active participant in regulatory, GFSI (BRC), corporate, and other 3rd party audits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
  • B.S. in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field OR minimum of three years of experience in successfully leading multi-departmental sanitation teams in a food processing environment.
  • Minimum of three years working in a sanitation-related role in the food industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, policies, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external parties at multiple levels.
  • Ability to understand and write SOPs, SSOPs, and Master Sanitation Schedules.
  • Keen awareness and enforcement of safety procedures and precautions.
  • Knowledge of chemicals and chemical usage.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers and computer programs.
