Time Out New York Food and Drink Editor 

Time Out New York is an award-winning lifestyle publisher focused on helping our audience make the most of their diverse and vibrant cities. We are looking for a knowledgeable, connected, funny and engaging food and Drink Editor who has their fingers on the pulse of NYC’s ever-changing culinary scene.

This editor will be covering the full scope of New York’s hospitality industry—including bars, restaurants, cafés, chefs, pop-ups and events, as well as the latest trends and news. They will need to be a brilliant communicator: in writing, on video and in person. We’re looking for someone who can bring cutting-edge NYC food and drink recommendations to life and excite an audience across multiple channels: text, video and more.

This creative individual will understand how to tell the same story across both Time Out’s website and social channels. They’ll be just as able to write an expertly curated guide or review as they are able to shoot and edit a quick video of a restaurant visit or street food encounter for Instagram and TikTok. They will be not only fully conversant with traffic and engagement goals, but also greatly motivated by them to grow a loyal audience.

What we look for in a candidate

The ideal candidate will have broad and open-minded expertise in food and drink: someone who is equally excited by a pop-up street vendor as they are a Michelin-starred restaurant. They will also be an excellent collaborator and commissioner: someone who is natural at working across departments and divisions and who is also able to source and work with freelance expertise where necessary, to make sure we are as broad and diverse as NYC.

This candidate will also be a great partner, and the main point of contact, for Time Out Market New York in DUMBO. They should be excited to grow the Market’s vision and offer high-value support by understanding what does and doesn't move the needle in terms of driving audience and footfall. They’ll need to be excited to get to know and build relations with the entire Time Out Market team, including vendors, and have the contacts and knowledge to recommend new culinary concepts.

The successful applicant will be a fast, accurate and creative writer and will be required to write numerous reviews, venue listings and feature stories every week. They will also be keen to visit and review restaurants and bars across the city, as well as attend openings, launches and other events. From time to time, the editor will also contribute to commercial briefs, host panels and write sponsored content. At the same time, they’ll know how to maintain the editorial integrity that has made Time Out a leader in the lifestyle journalism space for more than 50 years, and ensure the independence of its coverage

Skills & Expereince:

  • Journalism experience, ideally in food media OR hands-on hospitality experience
  • A thorough understanding of and enthusiasm for the hospitality scene in NYC
  • An everlasting supply of ideas for stories to write
  • Attention to detail and grammatical skills
  • The ability to shoot excellent photos and videos of dishes, restaurants and bars
  • The ability to appear on-camera in videos discussing the NYC food and drink scene
  • The ability to edit basic short videos for social platforms
  • Familiarity with analytics tools like Parse.ly or Google Analytics
  • Excellent interview skills
  • Experience in writing critical food and drink reviews
  • The ability to learn new applications and CMS quickly
  • Experience in using social media and SEO to grow new audiences and inspire
  • existing audiences to engage more deeply with a range of content
  • A passion for going out! There is the expectation that the journalist will attend events,
  • openings and interviews and won’t be hesitant to say yes to opportunities
  • Strong relationship-building skills, relating to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and assignments at once
  • The ability to meet tight deadlines
  • An eagerness to contribute to major projects, monthly themes, big features, digital covers and newsletters as required, taking ownership of any that apply directly to food and drink.
  • An embrace of Time Out’s data-driven approach to content by monitoring the performance of food and drink stories and lists on a daily basis, focusing on audience development and making sure that their content contributes to growth.
