Description
This is a full-time position that performs skilled mechanical and electrical work in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of motorized heavy equipment, heavy/light trucks, and automobiles, under general supervision. Work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Evening and weekend overtime hours may be required.
This is one of seven Fleet Maintenance Technicians who report directly to the Motor Pool Administrator. There are four Fleet Maintenance Technician II positions. The Motor Pool Division is one of five divisions in the Public Services Department.
Applications are being accepted by both SEIU Hourly union members as well as from the general public. Applications from the public will be considered after all in-house union obligations have been met.

Those qualified will be invited to participate in a performance test and oral interview. Candidates must successfully pass each component by 70% or better in order proceed in the process.

Major Duties
  1. Performs computerized and physical diagnostics and repair of automotive, truck and heavy equipment engine, driveline, safety, convenience, lighting, and hydraulic control systems problems.
  2. Repairs various heavy equipment and other specialized equipment.
  3. Rebuilds hydraulic components, alternators, generators, valves, compressors, and carburetors.
  4. Repairs equipment following specification as outlined in service manuals.
  5. Repairs brakes on automobiles, heavy/light trucks and some heavy equipment.
  6. Performs daily data computer entry and accesses information concerning work orders and repair orders.
  7. Performs some basic design/modification/fabrication alternatives to keep equipment operable.
  8. Performs shop and tool maintenance at a high level of competence.
  9. Performs welding, fabrication, and lathe work.
  10. Acts as lead worker to include oversight of maintenance and equipment repair and providing technical information and advice to other City employees as appropriate.
  11. Performs some bodywork and painting, realignment of windows, doors, and collision estimates.
  12. Performs other mechanical equipment repair tasks and related duties such as answering radio calls to the garage when needed and overseeing emergency crews during rain and snow storms and major equipment breakdowns, as directed by supervision.

Job Requirements
  1. Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. with at least one (1) year of automotive repair at a recognized school. However, a state mechanic certification or NIASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) certification in heavy-duty truck repair with at least four repair specialty categories will substitute for the one year of automotive school requirement.
  2. Within one year of date of hire, must acquire a State mechanic certification or NIASE certification in heavy-duty truck repair with the following repair specialty categories: diesel engine repair, suspension & steering systems, breaks and braking systems, and electrical systems.
  3. Minimum of three (3) years' experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair work.
  4. Ability to use welding equipment with experience in welding, cutting and fabricating; with a minimum of two (2) years' experience.
  5. Minimum of two (2) years' experience in diagnosing and repairing automotive and heavy equipment electrical and hydraulic systems.
  6. Experience equivalent to a journeyman's automotive mechanic.
  7. Must be able to read and follow specifications outlined in service manuals.
  8. Must provide own tools.
  9. Familiarity with or ability to learn and understand, Dossier or other Fleet Maintenance and job/work order software.
  10. Ability to oversee and act as lead worker in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  11. Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver's license and a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with A and N endorsements.

Supplemental Information
  1. Must be able to use proper protective equipment including respirators.
  2. Must be able to lift heavy equipment up to 70 pounds.
  3. Must be able to climb ladders and/or work from awkward positions.
  4. Daily exposure to dust and noise.
  5. Must be able to lift, bend, stretch, squat, or kneel in handling parts and equipment for repairs and installations.
