Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt, Full-time

Position Location: Clover, SC

Overview:

The Fitter / Fabricator position grinds, copes, notches, and fits parts as necessary. The Fitter also welds and partially assembles parts when required to complete job. This position is responsible for interpreting drawings and sketches, and doing layout work on piping, structural, plate, etc. Must be able to calculate any dimensions necessary to complete the assigned job. The Fitter must maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly manner, always keeping the safety of themselves and others in mind.

Daily Duties:

  • Grinds, cope, notch, and fit parts as necessary.
  • Obtains the necessary materials, drawings, and tools to perform each job.
  • Communicates with other employees, that either receive or supply parts to them, to resolve quality and production problems.
  • Interprets drawings and sketches and does layout work on piping, structural, plate, etc.
  • Calculates any dimensions necessary to complete the assigned job.
  • Fits-up and tack welds materials to be welded.
  • Welds and partially assembles parts when required to complete job.
  • Works without print to make replacement maintenance parts. Measures, marks, burns, cuts, bevels, etc., material to prepare for welding.
  • Allowing for shrinkage and expansion. Performs welding in all positions, makes various types of welds such as lap, “V” butt, fillet, etc.
  • Uses carbon arc to back gouge welds on pressure vessels and other production and tooling requirements. Welds to repair machine parts, guards, piping, fittings, etc. when necessary.
  • Uses acetylene and plasma burning equipment to dismantle and fabricate parts and assemblies.
  • Fabricates jigs and fixtures to be used in production as needed. Sets up and operates positioners and rolls.
  • Cleans, chips, grinds, etc. work before and after weld.
  • Sets up and operates various types of welding machines, including MIG, TIG, STICK, to fit and weld any type of material.
  • Setup includes but is not limited to the setting of voltage and amperage, changing electrode tips and weld wire, and replenishing gas supply by hook up to full line of gas.
  • Visually and dimensionally checks product and weldments for compliance with drawing and other specifications.
  • Maintains and tracks operating data such as quantity, time, item number, inventory, and heat numbers as required.
  • Operates a hoist or manually moves, loads, and unloads material and/or product.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, such as machinery lubrication and cleaning.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or needed.

Position Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Attention to detail and advanced organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve practical problems, make logical decisions, and communicate ideas.

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, walk, kneel, bend, crawl, and crouch for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of machines or vehicles to exact positions.
  • Ability to judge the distances between you and an object, depth perception.
  • Ability to respond to a signal when it appears, reaction time.
  • Coordinate the use of hands, arms, and legs fully. Reach for the handle and use it to manipulate objects and materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Vision – ability to see details at close range and details at distance (either naturally or with correction).
  • Regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Mental and visual attention is necessary to effectively complete work tasks.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work outside and exposed to weather.
  • Wear protective or safety equipment, i.e. safety boots/shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, etc.
  • May be exposed to high levels of noise, grease, dust, and a variety of substances that are typically associated with a construction site.
