Sandy River Lodge
Nelson Lagoon, Alaska
Position PurposeThe Fishing Guide position is responsible for planning and executing professional and safe sportfish guiding services to guests at Sandy River Lodge. This position is directly supervised by the Head Fishing Guide/Lodge Manager.
Essential Functions
  • Applies knowledge of location to plan and execute safe sportfish guided services for individuals and groups.
  • Applies knowledge to comply with local and state fishing laws and regulations, and company policies and procedures.
  • Provides a safe and enjoyable guided fishing experience for lodge guests.
  • Safely operates and transports guests in small powered boats and ATVs to remote fishing areas.
  • Instructs guests on single hand and two-handed fly-fishing techniques.
  • Assists guests with the netting and safe handling of fish.
  • Maintains a friendly and warm demeanor with team members and guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work EnvironmentThis job operates in an unpredictable, remote environment where phone and internet communications are limited. Most tasks will be performed at Sandy River Lodge and its surrounding areas. This role routinely spends extended periods of time working outdoors in cold, wet, and windy conditions.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and/or listen. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, hike, use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel, and reach with hands and arms to perform job duties properly and safely. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift gear and supplies up to 50 pounds.
Required Education & Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of fly-Fishing Guide experience required.
  • Current Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) sportFishing Guide license.
  • Current U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) OUPV license.
  • Valid drivers license and insurable under APICDAs insurance policy.
  • Current First-Aid and CPR certification.
Other Skills
  • Expert level understanding and knowledge of single hand and two-handed fly-fishing techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable State of Alaska sportfishing regulations.
  • Familiarity with terrain of local countryside and waterways preferred.
  • Prior work and/or living experience in remote wilderness setting.
  • Must be able to work varied and extended hours.
  • Basic understanding of customer service practices.
  • General knowledge of APICDA communities, geographic locations, fisheries, and tourism preferred.
