The South Walton Fire District (SWFD) is a professional fire/rescue agency located in Walton County Florida. SWFD maintains 5 fire stations, a communications center and provides beach safety services for the South Walton Beaches. SWFD is responsible for Fire Protection, Emergency Medical Services Transport, Lifeguards, Hazard Mitigation, Public Fire/Life Safety Education and Prevention as well as 911 Communication Services for an area of 84 square miles and serves a population ranging from 40,000 to over 150,000 during the tourist season.
The South Walton Fire District is currently seeking applicants for the position of Fire/Life Safety Inspector. This position is an at-will non-exempt employee who will normally work a 40-hour week under the direction of the Fire Marshal.
This position is responsible for conducting comprehensive, technical inspections of buildings and property to verify compliance with all applicable fire and life safety laws, regulations, standards and codes; preparing reports of violations of unsafe conditions; keeping files of inspection records and preparing reports of activities.
Major Duties:

- Inspects new and existing buildings, developments and short-term rental properties for code compliance; issue citations as required;
- May approve or disapprove plans; maintains records and reports;
- Performs hazardous materials inspection as necessary;
- Assists the Fire Marshal in presentations to civic and community groups;
- Prepares inspection reports;
- Enforces all District fire codes and ordinances and regulations;
- Attends meetings, seminars and training sessions as required;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school graduate or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma
- Possess and maintain a valid, appropriate driver's license and an acceptable driving record
- 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Certificate (EVOC) required
- Possess and maintain a Florida State Fire Safety Inspector 1 Certification.
- Current CPR certification as accepted by Florida Department of Health
- National Incident Management System certification in IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800
- Must be a non-smoking/non-tobacco using person, both on and off the job, at the time of employment and maintain same non-smoking and non-use throughout the term of employment.
- Must successfully pass the Fire District’s medical/physical, drug screen and background check requirements as a condition of employment.
- A combination of education, certifications, training and/or experience may be considered.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
- Knowledge of National, State and Local Codes, Standards and related ordinances;
- Knowledge of modern fire inspection principals, practices and methods;
- Knowledge of fire protection systems;
- Knowledge of hazardous materials, water supply systems, fire loads and fire safety education;
- Knowledge of building construction;
- Knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the District;
- Knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques and equipment;
- Skill in reading building plans and specifications;
- Ability to read blueprints and plats;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, contractors, architects, County employees, community and business leaders and the public;
- Ability to apply judgment in making decisions on code compliance;
- Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in writing;
- Ability to apply and enforce local and State codes and ordinances;
- Ability to utilize computers and associated software.
- Ability to exercise independent thinking and reasoning within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards and precedents.

Physical Demands:
- Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of electronic and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, telephone, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
- Sedentary work when performing administrative functions to physical work with the ability to perform frequent heavy lifting over 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs. at fire and inspection sites.
- Work involves climbing, kneeling, balancing, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling and grasping. The noise level in this environment can be loud at inspection sites.
Work Environment:
The work is performed in a variety of locations. This can include, but not limited to, the fire stations, commercial occupancies, constructions sites, development sites as well as educational and assembly sites.
The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fumes, and hazardous situations and materials that require the use of protective equipment.
