Department Overview:The men and women of Islamorada Fire Rescue(IFR) serve within a progressive fire department that is focused on delivering unrivaled service to those in need. We foster a fraternal atmosphere prioritizing crew expertise within fire and EMS as well as achieving the personal growth goals of our members. We accomplish this by maintaining an aggressive training regimen and supporting education at all levels. Through our dedication to our craft, and by employing the latest technology, we are able to deliver our services above the industry standard.
Current staffing includes 41 full time Fire/EMS crew, with 12 on duty each shift, providing Emergency Medical Service, Rescue and Fire Suppression, working a 24/48-hour shift. We respond from three stations, 19, 20 and 21, located throughout our stretch of the Florida Keys. Each station houses an Engine and a Rescue, with a centrally located Ladder truck. Recent years have allowed for significant staffing increases and department growth. Our crew levels are stable, and turnover is minimal, with most openings occurring from retirements or adding new positions.
IFR candidates are not simply hired into a position. They must earn it by completing our rigorous on-boarding academy. Should you be invited to attend our academy, you are encouraged to prepare yourself immediately. Our training is unlike the Minimum Standards training that you have completed. It is extremely physically and mentally demanding and will push the limits of every recruit's ability. Full time positions will be awarded based upon your performance throughout your training. All recruits will receive daily evaluations focused on knowledge, effort, achievement, and teamwork. Your training will be 4-5 weeks in duration(depending upon scheduling conflicts/holidays) and recruits will be compensated at the Reserve Firefighter rate of pay for their certification level (EMT or Paramedic). The top recruits will be offered full time employment. Remaining recruits will be offered Reserve Firefighter positions where you will have an opportunity to continue your development and work with a wide cross section of our crew. Reserve Firefighters will have a minimum number of shifts that they must work per month. While the Reserve positions do not receive the same benefits package and fixed schedule as a full-time position, they are compensated at a higher hourly rate of pay, and frequently are offered more days of work than our full-time firefighters. Future full-time openings will be offered to eligible Reserve Firefighters before being advertised outside the Department.
If you feel you are up to the challenge of becoming one of our brothers or sisters, please submit all of the documents requested. If you make the initial cut, we will contact you to schedule an in-person evaluation.
