Job description

Firefighters perform public safety work involving the protection of life and property by fighting fires, responding to emergency incidents, and using Emergency Medical Services (EMS) skills. This is general duty firefighting work in the protection of life & property through combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. Work involves performance of potentially hazardous tasks under emergency conditions and may involve extreme exertion under such handicaps as smoke, heat, and cramped surroundings.

After specialized training, work may extend to responding to ambulance calls with primary responsibility for performing lifesaving activities at accident scenes, and in other emergency situations, and maintaining communications with the medical personnel at local treatment facilities to provide information necessary to maintain life support once victims have been transported. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a company and/or shift commander.

Pay/Benefits:

$19.69 to 20.87/hr. probationary period of 1 yr.

$22.77/hr. after passing probation.

$500/yr clothing allowance

12 hours of holiday pay for 9 holidays.

Ability to carry over up to 168 hours of comp time from year to year.

Longevity pay scale starts after completion of 5 years of service.

Three Floating Holidays in addition to vacation time.

· Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents, fights fires and utilizes either basic life support (BLS) or advanced life support (ALS) for victims of accidents or other emergencies.

· Assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, advancing lines, entry, ventilation and salvage work and extrication.

· Forces entry of premises for firefighting and rescue operations, uses chemical fire extinguishers, axes, claw tools, ceiling hooks and other equipment and tools; makes openings in buildings and ventilation.

· Removes people from danger, administers emergency medical care to injured people and performs cleanup and overhaul work.

· Operates fire apparatus, ambulances, and hydraulic equipment for extrication of victims trapped in vehicles or buildings.

· Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study or technical material and attends training classes in firefighting, emergency medical care and related subjects.

· Conducts station tours for public, school and community demonstrations and programs.

· Makes fire code inspections of business establishments and prepares pre-incident fire plans.

· Communicates with the public and other city employees in performing community service and public education activities.

· Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of the fire department property and equipment; maintains quarters and cleans equipment.

· Perform the duties of the senior firefighter in his absence.

· Performs related tasks as assigned.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Knowledge of firefighting methods and modern fire prevention practices

· Knowledge of overhaul and salvage operations.

· Knowledge of Fire Code and procedures involved in inspections.

· Knowledge of emergency medical practices and procedures.

· Skill in the operation and care of fire apparatus and equipment

· Ability to learn firefighting principles, practices, and methods.

· Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and exert self physically for sustained periods.

· Ability to perform emergency medical care, operate independently and competently in emergency situations under conditions of stress.

· Ability to learn to operate fire apparatus and use firefighting tools within a reasonable period.

· Ability to perform some mechanical work involved in operating and maintaining firefighting apparatus, equipment, and tools.

· Ability to deal firmly, yet courteously with the public at emergency scenes as well as in non-emergency situations.

· Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and to transmit this to victims to reduce likelihood of panic.

· Ability to learn the street system and physical layout of the City of Rhinelander

· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

· Minimum Qualification(s) Required – Graduation from high school or successful completion of G.E.D. test.

· Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

· Must hold a current certification of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I (FF II preferred) or State accepted equivalent.

· Applicants must be certified as a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) as a minimum.

· Special Requirement(s) – Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation test.

· Preferred/Desirable Qualification – Coursework toward an associate degree in Fire Science or Fire Science Technology from a regionally accredited college or university is preferred.

· Substance Abuse Testing – Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

· Future Requirements – Applicants must obtain residency within 15 miles of the City limits within 6 months of hire date (time may be negotiable with Fire Chief approval).
