The City of South Milwaukee offers lateral transfer opportunities for salary and vacation credit. Successful candidates seeking lateral transfer consideration will be evaluated on previous service to determine commensurate pay and vacation. The Administration Department, in consultation with the Fire Chief, shall have final determination for placement on the Local 1633 Collective Bargaining Agreement wage and vacation schedule.
Residency requirement for City of South Milwaukee Fire Department: Must live within 25 miles of city borders.
Qualifications at time of application:

• At least 18 years of age and able to work in the United States
• Valid Wisconsin Driver's License (or ability to obtain Wisconsin Driver's License if applicant is licensed in another state) with good driving record
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Wisconsin or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Licensure - Proof of Licensure Required. Points awarded for National Registry - Paramedic Licensure
• Wisconsin Firefighter I Certification or equivalent training (training from outside Wisconsin must meet State of Wisconsin requirements)
• Wisconsin Driver/Operator - Pumper Certification* or equivalent training is preferred. (training from outside Wisconsin must meet State of Wisconsin requirements - points will be awarded for current certification) *Candidates not possessing this certification will be required to obtain it within one year of appointment
• Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate or Card (issued no earlier than January 2023). Proof of CPAT may be submitted via uploaded attachment to your application, or emailed to if obtained after you have submitted your application. Candidates are responsible for obtaining and submitting their CPAT Certificate or Card by February 7th, 2024. Failure to obtain and submit a valid CPAT prior to the deadline will result in exclusion from the eligibility list.

Using a point value system, preference points will be awarded for paramedic licensure, current enrollment in a paramedic program, Associate or Bachelor's Degrees from accredited colleges or universities, and various State of WI certifications or equivalent. Successful applicants will be required to pass a written test; oral interviews; thorough medical and psychological examinations; and will be subject to a complete and thorough background examination to determine suitability.
Candidates must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays on a 24-hour shift and have an ability to handle several tasks simultaneously; perform essential functions of this position; and use all standard firefighting and emergency medical equipment.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Fire Captain and/or Shift Officer responsible for fire suppression, fire inspection, vehicle and fire station maintenance, hazardous material response, rescue operations, and emergency medical services.
SHIFT/HOURS
7:00 A.M. - 7:00 A.M.; 56 hours per week (Generally); Additional time as the Job Dictates; Subject to emergency on-call.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Fire Chief, Fire Captain, and Fire Lieutenant.
Duties/Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates and performs maintenance checks on all fire department vehicles and equipment.
• Responds as a member of a medical team to bring basic or advanced emergency medical care to the citizens of the community.
• Performs duties as a licensed/certified Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic according to criteria and standards set forth by department, Milwaukee County, and State of Wisconsin, when assigned.
• Prepares written reports and maintains records under supervision of the shift officer.
• Performs duties as a Fire Apparatus Driver and Pump Operator, when assigned.
• Participates in daily training exercises and classroom lectures.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participates in fire inspections in various occupancies in the city.
• Responsible for cleanliness of station and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment, and all other fire department property.
• Conducts demonstrations, tours, and public speeches on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, first aid, and other subjects to the public.
• Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Wisconsin or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) licensure--Proof of Licensure required. National Registry Paramedic Licensure preferred.

4. Wisconsin Firefighter I Certification or equivalent training. Training outside of Wisconsin must meet State of Wisconsin requirements.
5. Qualifying Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate or Card
6. Wisconsin Driver/Operator--Pumper Certification* or equivalent training is preferred. (Training from outside Wisconsin must meet the State of Wisconsin requirements.) *Candidates not possessing this certification upon appointment will be required to obtain it within one year.
7. At least 18 years of age
8. Able to work in the United States.

• Extent Flexibility - roll/pull hose; remove ceiling with pike poles; push ladder to peak; reach out from ladder; chop with an axe; extricate victim; overhaul burning building; remove building parts.
• Dynamic Flexibility - chop with axe; pick up hose; advance hose; strip roof; do CPR/chest compressions.

Wage and benefits are determined by the terms of the South Milwaukee Firefighters Protective Association Local 1633 contract.
