Job Description
An employee in this class is responsible for conducting fire inspections and enforcing the fire code. Duties also include conducting fire investigations to determine the cause and origin of fires. Positions are involved in collecting evidence for all fires of suspicious nature. Positions are also involved in conducting fire training programs and public education programs. Judgment and initiative are required in all aspects of the position Additional duties include assisting Emergency Management during severe weather outbreaks; hazardous materials spill investigations and training. Our office serves as a liaison between County Government and County Fire Departments. It assists with Fire Department ratings inspection as well as training exercises. We interact and assist in a variety of projects involving law enforcement, county departments, state agencies, as well as civic groups. This position is part-time, 500 hours per year
Examples of Job Duties
- Inspecting public buildings, public schools, foster homes, daycares, nursing homes, and places of assembly to enforce compliance with the fire code; researching and determining how various codes should be enforced.
- Reviewing building plans for new construction to ensure compliance with fire codes.
- Investigating fires to determine cause and origin; collecting and preserving evidence; cooperating with law enforcement agencies in establishing cases.
- Educating the public in the detection and correction of fire hazards; speaking to various groups on fire prevention.
- Investigating complaints and answering questions regarding fire hazards and violations of fire regulations.
- Keeping records and preparing reports of fire prevention activities.
- On-call for after-hours (rotation schedule)
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of principles of fire prevention and safety.
- Thorough knowledge of inspection practices and all applicable fire and building codes.
- Thorough knowledge of current strategy, tactics and techniques of fire suppression.
- Thorough knowledge of salvage, overhaul, ventilation and fire rescue operations.
- Thorough knowledge of current firefighting methods including combustible liquid and structural firefighting principles, practices and procedures.
- Ability to independently interpret fire code.
- Ability to conduct effective fire scene examinations and investigations of suspicious fires.
- Ability to instruct volunteer firefighters and other employees in the principles and techniques of fire suppression.
- Ability to prepare reports and document case findings.
- Ability to perform heavy manual work under adverse conditions.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or have obtained a GED. Must possess and maintain a valid NC driver's license with a safe driving record. Relevant experience in the field related to fire suppression, investigation, or fire/emergency services. A standard NC Fire Code Inspector Level I or greater and/or the ability to prequalify as a Level I Fire Inspector.
STANLY COUNTY BENEFITS (Full-time Employees)
Employees accrue sick and vacation time each paycheck.
Stanly County observes twelve (12) holidays. New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday), Christmas (3 days).
Employees receive one (1) personal day per year.

Stanly County provides health & vision insurance with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. Our plan is a PPO, 80/20, with a $1000 deductible. Teledoc is offered through our insurance for a $10 co-pay per visit. Primary care visit is a $40 co-payment. Specialist is $50 co-pay. One free eye exam per year. The insurance coverage is FREE to full-time employees.
Dental Coverage is with Guardian dental insurance and is FREE to full-time employees.
Other volunteer insurance benefits include: Flexible Spending Program, Life Insurance, Cancer, Accident, and Disability policies.
Stanly County offers an employee health clinic. Our on-site Advance Practice Provider will see employees and dependents covered on our county insurance plan free of charge. This service does not replace your primary healthcare providers but augments their care.
As a wellness benefit, employees have the option of joining the Stanly County YMCA. The County will pay half of the employee's membership.
Employee Assistant Program is offered through Atrium Health. Each employee will receive up to six (6) free sessions on a rolling year. Dependent children and/or spouse may also use the sessions.
RETIREMENT:
Stanly County Employees will be a member of the N. C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. Stanly County is required to withhold six percent (6%) from each paycheck and deposit it into the retirement system. The County also contributes to the plan. You are vested at five years as a contributing member. After one year of contributing membership in the system, a death benefit is available if you die while still in active service or within 180 days of your last day of service.
NC 401(k) (Supplemental Retirement Plan):
Employees can contribute to the Empower 401(k) plan upon hire. If the employee contributes at least one percent (1%), Stanly County will match one percent (1%).
Additionally, employees may make additional contributions through the following options: 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and Roth Plan Option.
LONGEVITY:
Longevity pay is earned after three (3) years of continuous Local Government retirement benefited service working with Stanly County government.
