Job description

Under the direction of the Commander of the Office of Protective Services, the Fire Chief plans, organizes, and directs staff in the performance of fire prevention activities at the Fairview Developmental Center. In conjunction with the Health and Safety Office and Plant Operations, the Fire Chief provides the facility with required and necessary fire prevention and hazardous materials control, including the inventory, storage, usage, and disposition of hazardous materials and waste. The Fire Chief makes inspections of Developmental Centers to ensure compliance with laws, rules, and regulations; coordinates fire prevention and other emergency or disaster drills or inspections; participates in licensing surveys; maintains emergency evacuation plans; identifies and reports fire hazards and makes recommendations for improvements to buildings and grounds.

Department Information
The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.
These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and related conditions. Services are provided through state-operated developmental centers and community facilities, and contracts with 21 nonprofit regional centers. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
Special Requirements
The Office of Protective Services (OPS) is a Law Enforcement Agency. After the background check clears, the applicant will be appointed to the position. This background check includes interviews of employment and personal references; and FBI, California DOJ finger print clearances and DMV clearance(s). The selected applicant must complete a notarized waiver for access to their personal records.
Current California driver's license are required. All appointments subject to pre-employment physical and fingerprint clearance.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
The Fire Chief must have knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting emergency services activates, facility buildings and grounds, fire hazards and available firefighting resources, principles and practices of effective management of emergency services personnel.
The completion of a Fire Technology Associate of Science college level degree is desirable. Must be knowledgeable in fire prevention and suppression principles and practices; firefighting tools and apparatus; emergency first aid and CPR.
