Department ESKENAZI SCHOOL OF ART ARCH + (BL-SOAD-IUBLA) Department Information The Eskenazi School houses 14 different areas in art, design, and merchandising. Our students are encouraged to learn collaboratively and across disciplines, while immersing themselves in a particular area of study. Additionally, the schools positioning as part of the College of Arts and Sciences allows us to equip graduates with the insights and values of a classical liberal arts education The Makerspace Instructional Shops Manager oversees all aspects of the Fine Arts and Kirkwood fabrication labs in support of the academic and curricular needs of the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design Job Summary Department Specific Responsibilities Oversees the general operation of instructional digital fabrication tools that include printing, plotting, cutting, and engraving equipment Serves as the point of contact for research and instructional use of fabrication lab facilities Provides technical assistance to students and faculty who use the fabrication labs in design and construction of art projects for classes and for research Develops safety protocols, standards and training for all equipment Provides non-credit instruction on the practice and use of all equipment Builds, maintains, and mentors a staff of hourly lab technicians Manages the purchase of fabrication equipment, materials, and supplies Maintains equipment, including preventive maintenance, scheduling repairs as needed, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and maintaining an active list of vendors to respond to equipment loss Responsible for the IT maintenance of all software relevant to the operation of equipment Works with the other Instructional Shops managers on projects General Responsibilities Manages activities and provides support to students and/or faculty in educational resource facility (such as laboratory, learning/technology center, testing center, etc.).

Designs learning experiences that support faculty and student education and/or development outcomes. Operates various instruments and/or machinery (some may be restricted from student use), assists students using permitted equipment, and provides instruction, training, and oversight for safe operation. Develops instructional and training materials for proper and safe use of the facility, various equipment, and/or tools as needed.

Documents issues or concerns with operations and reports to appropriate parties; may evaluate and make operational judgment calls on interpretation of guidance, processes, protocols, etc. Ensures and monitors compliance with various internal and external policies and procedures; ensures any certifications/accreditation or external relationships are maintained; makes recommends adjustments in policies, procedures, and staffing expectations as necessary to ensure compliance. Creates and provides reports on activities to measure operational success and to assist in resource and strategic decision-making.

Performs other various administrative and operational duties such as ensuring security, adhering and monitoring budget, ensuring inventory of resources and materials as needed. Stays current and up-to-date by attending relevant training sessions/conferences, participating in related professional organizations, and researching emerging technology to improve operations and/or outcomes. May provide guidance or oversee hourly staff.

Qualifications Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION Required Bachelor's degree (preferably in related field) WORK EXPERIENCE Preferred Related digital fabrication shop experience SKILLS Required Proficient communication skills Strong technical knowledge of a variety of 3D printing technologies, laser engravers, and other digital fabrication equipment and tools Maintains a high degree of professionalism Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills Demonstrates a high commitment to quality Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty Working Conditions / Demands The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
