Job Summary The apprentice of the Glass Shop is responsible in assisting the manager of the Glass Shop with the design, construction, and repair of scientific glassware to support the teaching and research mission of all Indiana University Campuses. This position is also responsible for assisting with inventory, equipment, and records in relation to scientific glassblowing.

The researcher would talk with the glassblower about their idea to help in making design decisions (ie, what can/cannot be done with glass). Job requires creativity and innovation in turning goals into tangible reality. There is thus a high level of decision-making.

The discussion may also include looking at an item in a catalog to determine if it would be more cost effective to make the item locally. Or the researcher may want to modify an existing purchased glass item, and the researcher would seek the expertise of the glassblower in helping to make critical decisions about the design. Consultation may also include training research workers in basic glassblowing.

Department Specific Responsibilities Collaborates with researcher (Faculty/Postdoc/Graduate Student) to develop a drawing for fabricating specialized glassware for a research project. Development of the plan also entails discussing and research of the materials (including quartz and graded seals) needed for a successful end product. Repairs of broken glassware and/or modification of existing specialized scientific glassware.

The decision to repair broken glassware is based upon the cost effectiveness of making the repair vs rebuilding. If the damage is extensive, it could be more cost effective to recreate the piece rather than rebuild. Gives an estimate on the cost of a project based upon time and materials to present to the researcher.

When a job is completed, the bill must be sent to the researcher in a timely manner. Responsible for purchasing materials and supplies used for various projects, and replacement parts needed to maintain equipment in good working order at all times. Notes are kept of special designs regarding materials, drawings, vendors, etc.

During yearly Chemistry Open House, and tours of facilities by prospective undergraduate and graduate students, the glassblower demonstrates scientific glassblowing techniques. Additionally, educational workshops are arranged for graduate students to experience basic scientific glassblowing techniques.

Many students will use this knowledge in their careers when a glassblowing shop is not available, and they need to make alterations or minor repairs to their glassware. Performs routine lubrication of lathes, saws, etc.; replace belts; change blades; routine cleaning of equipment; change water used by equipment that cuts or grinds glass; replace oven element as needed. General Responsibilities Performs technical and administrative duties in support of 1 or more fields of fine/applied art, including ceramics, printmaking, digital imaging and maker-spaces, studio art, cinema, wood working, metal working, and studio art.

Interfaces with faculty, students, and Fine Arts staff to ensure proper inventory, safety standards, and maintenance of Fine Arts studios and fabrication spaces. Maintains equipment and supplies; coordinates repairs and orders new inventory as needed. Provides instructional support for Fine Arts classes and serves as an informational resource for student staff.

Assists with workshops, procedure implementation, and curriculum development. May take on special projects and training opportunities; may assist with gallery exhibit installation. Qualifications EDUCATION Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) WORK EXPERIENCE Preferred 4 years apprenticeship under a Master Glassblower, plus 4 years additional Glassblowing Experience in a research environment preferred.
