Job description

Position Summary:
The College of Agriculture and Life Science is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we prove and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.
This position functions from within the Administrative Service Center of the Cornell AgriTech at New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, under the direction of our Finance Manager (FM), and in collaboration with the Senior Financial Reporting Specialist (SFRS) and Transaction Specialist(s) and Principal Investigators (PIs), providing financial management support to the academic departments of Entomology, Food Science, Horticulture, Plant Pathology and USDA-ARS. The sponsored research budget for these departments/funds is approximately $20 million. There are currently 50 faculty/senior academics employed within these departments. Effort will be delivered in a team based environment and incumbent will be responsible for assisting, coordinating and ensuring the consistency and efficiency in the workflow surrounding the post-award process, providing exceptional professionalism and fostering collaboration. Provide post-award support for the management of all fund sources within the department(s) to include special emphasis on sponsored contracts, restricted and unrestricted gifts and endowments as required, ensuring compliance with University and agency-specific policy guidelines. Collaborate with College Research Office, Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), agency representatives and PI's to respond to post-award related issues and questions. Obtain sponsored programs certificate training and stay updated on changes in University policies and procedures as they relate to financial processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Associates degree with additional two years of experience.
  • More than 2 years and less than 4 years' work experience.
  • Accounting experience and/or formal coursework in accounting applications is required. Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules, and policies to transactions and understand impact on financial statements.
  • Must be able to compile, analyze, and report on complex financial data.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people. Attention to detail, organizational skills and prioritization skills are required.
  • Able to work quickly & effectively under pressure, use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature; balance conflicting priorities, interpret policies, and make decisions from a range of choices.
  • Demonstrates accountability in all work responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a high-level of proficiency with Excel, and experience with other standard office programs.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm.
  • Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations.
  • Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years concentrated experience in a financial office setting.
  • Expertise in Excel, KFS, Workday and IDR dashboards.
  • Familiarity with Cornell University or other higher education environment.
  • Previous experience with sponsored project financial transaction processing and award management.
