At Ports America, the Field Engineer is responsible for overseeing installation, maintenance and support of servers or other computer systems, and planning for and responding to service outages and other problems.
Additional duties may include scripting or light programming, project management for systems-related projects, supervising or training computer operators, and computer problems beyond the knowledge of technical support staff.
Essential Duties:
- Maintain and troubleshoot all technology components specific to the business at the local terminals, such as TOS interfaces, OCR systems, Gate Management systems, RFID systems, etc.
- Maintain the local technology infrastructure including the administration of switches, bridges, routers, servers, wireless infrastructure, phone systems, et al.
- Develop processes and procedures to optimize and stabilize our current environment.
- Respond to and document IT Service Desk incidents utilizing Ports America’s IT Service Desk system.
- Comply with Corporate Safety and IT policies and procedures.
- Ensure that the facilities, such as UPS and A/C, are working properly in all data centers.
- Interface with various vendors in the implementation and troubleshooting of this specific equipment.
- Maintain and troubleshoot all wireless computers, tablets, handhelds, and associated equipment used by Operations throughout the terminal.
- Ensure proper update of server infrastructure including O/S, Antivirus, WSUS updates, and proprietary applications.
- Ensure and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly data backups.
- Track and maintain all local IT assets.
- Verify that computer rooms and office areas are maintained and enlist the service delivery analysts to correct deficiencies.
- Create new and update existing IT documentation.
- Coordinate and schedule IT projects locally to minimize impact to the business.
- Fill in for Site Manager/Application Manager when the manager is unavailable.
- Respond to after-hours automated alerts that require onsite attention (as necessary) as part of 24x7 on-call rotation support
- May require some travel
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 5+ years of experience in a Windows Server environment supporting PCs, printers, network equipment (wired/wireless.)
- 5+ years of experience with network administration.
- Working knowledge of DHCP, DNS, Active Directory, Exchange, and Cisco administration.
- Experience with network topology.
- Wireless networking troubleshooting experience.
- VOIP experience.
- Valid US Driver’s License
- Obtain and Maintain TWIC credentials (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland Security

- Experience multi-tasking to handle changing priorities in a fast-paced environment to maximize time-management and efficiency.
- Experience writing scripts to perform administration.
- Assist and develop less experienced staff on technical issues and areas of expertise thus strengthening the group through leadership.
- Experience acting and communicating technical information to non-technical users.
Physical Working Attributes:
- Work in under-way construction sites, occasionally lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Climb stairs in buildings that are not elevator equipped and to work on projects that need after-hours support.
- Working around a marine terminal environment.
- Move and rack/un-rack servers up to 150 lbs. with assistance.
