Definition: The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is a highly skilled healthcare professional responsible for delivering comprehensive primary care services to individuals and families within our rural community and surrounding areas. FNPs play a critical role in providing accessible and quality healthcare, serving as a primary point of contact for patients and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to promote overall well-being.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a professional level position within the rural health clinic (RHC) and will report to the Clinic Manager. The incumbent will not typically act in a supervisory role, unless the incumbent has been assigned as a preceptor for a student.
Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions).
  1. Conduct comprehensive assessments, including medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic testing.
  2. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including prescribing medications and treatment modalities.
  3. Provide patient education on health maintenance, disease prevention, and chronic condition management.
  4. Diagnose and treat common acute illnesses, minor injuries, and chronic health conditions.
  5. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care and referrals to specialists as needed.
  6. Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records (EHR) for all patients.
  7. Participate in health promotion and community outreach activities to raise awareness and improve health outcomes.
  8. Stay current with best practices, clinical guidelines, and medical advancements to provide evidence-based care.
  9. Participate in quality assurance and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety.

Qualifications for Employment:
Qualifications for employment include the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a job, which are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.
Knowledge of:
o Pharmacology and drug interactions.
o Rural healthcare challenges and a commitment to addressing them.
o Pain management techniques, including the use of non-pharmacological interventions and appropriate prescription of pain medication.
o Healthcare policies, regulations, and reimbursement systems to ensure compliance and the efficient utilization of hospital resources.
o Wide range of knowledge from pediatric care to geriatric care.
Skill to:
o Educate and counsel patients.
o Make critical decisions and analyze patient data.
o Adapt approaches to meet the beliefs and needs of patients and their families.
o Manage chronic conditions, including monitoring, treatment, and patient education.
o Interpret diagnostic tests and imaging, such as x-rays, MRIs, and lab results, to make accurate diagnoses.
Ability to:
o Work in a collaborative team environment.
o Maintain continuing education and professional development in conjunction with regular patient visits.
o Handle the emotional demands of culturally competent patient care.
Required Certifications and Licenses:
Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification required
Active and unencumbered state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner required
Board certified as a Nurse Practitioner
Experience and Training:
Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is:
o Successful completion of a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing with specialization as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
The physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Strength, dexterity, cognitive ability, and coordination to operate a keyboard and video display terminal using word processing and databases. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Dexterity, coordination, bending and reaching to access and handle file(s); periodic lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, and other materials. Moderate lifting (up to 25 pounds) may be periodically required to include some bending, reaching, squatting, and stooping. The ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively, and exchange information accurately with all internal and external customers. Mental stamina to deal with emotionally difficult situations. Ability to appropriately handle stress and interact with others, including supervisors, coworkers, clients, and customers. Regular and consistent punctuality and attendance.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed under the following conditions:
Work environment is generally clean and comfortable. Lighting conditions are typically good. Frequent interruptions to planned work activities occur. Position routinely encounters situations with potentially infectious material; additionally, position routinely experiences potential exposure to blood and body fluids. Usage of protective equipment and safety precautions for brief or extended periods of time may be required.
