Bilingual Encouraged
This position does not require bilingual language skills but there is a need in the communities that we serve, and all are encouraged to apply. Bilingual differential pay is provided to positions that require to use a language other than English to fulfill their job duties within their position. Bilingual differential pay is 5% of the employee's base pay.
We are seeking a Family Coach to join our Warm Springs Self Sufficiency team. In this role, you will monitor the progress and needs and make necessary modifications to the family's case plan. You will assist families through out-reach in various communities, schools, and agencies.
Family Coaches work closely with Oregon families and work is based in the Warm Springs Branch and travel in the local community. Family Coaches access state vehicles to perform these duties. This position is not remote.

What you need to qualify
  • A Bachelor's degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field

OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in any field and one year of Human Services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing)

OR
  • An Associate degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND two years of Human Services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing)

OR
  • Three years of Human Services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Family Coaches work duties take them into the community to work with Oregon families and meet with community partners. They will have access to state vehicles to perform these duties, so an acceptable driving record is required. ADA requests for alternate & acceptable transportation can be made during the interview.
  • Individuals with bilingual language skills are encouraged to apply but is not a requirement for this position. Bilingual differential pay is contingent upon passing test(s) evaluating your proficiency in a language other than English. Family Coaches are tested for both their verbal and written skills in a language other than English.

Essential attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
  • Experience initiating and maintaining relationships and working successfully with diverse populations.
  • Experience explaining complex rules, regulations, processes, and procedures both verbally and in written communications while demonstrating respect, preserving dignity, and a passion to serve the public.
  • Experience successfully organizing work efficiently, prioritizing developing situations, managing multiple tasks with interruptions, as well as managing workloads with competing deadlines. In this role, Family Coaches are working with families on emergent needs and often rearrange priorities to problem solve.
  • Experience with direct client service and engagement in dynamic environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism and work with compassion through a trauma informed lens while serving customers and participants that may be experiencing stress, trauma, and/or domestic violence.
  • Experience working in the human/social service field interviewing customers to obtain personal and sensitive information to help determine eligibility for agency programs and benefits.
  • Experience with case management and assessing customers' strengths & service needs.
  • Knowledge of ODHS programs and community resources serving the needs of diverse populations including those that provide services for drug & alcohol issues and the ability to coordinate multiple parties & integrate multiple services.

Your duties at a glance
The Self Sufficiency Offices help with food benefits (SNAP), cash for families (TANF), childcare assistance (ERDC), medical, refugee services, and domestic violence services.
The goal of the Self-Sufficiency Program is to help families address barriers and gain skills and access to employment opportunities to become self-sufficient. TANF is a collection of programs directed at improving the lives of very low-income Oregon families with children.
A Family Coach conducts interviews to determine family need and eligibility. Explores alternate resources and links clients to community services. Completes program applications for program benefits and, if eligible, issues appropriate support payments. Engages clients in family evaluation of strengths. Jointly develops a case plan and identifies the steps the family will take towards self-sufficiency and meeting their basic needs. Monitors progress, needs, and makes necessary modifications to the case plan. Initiates and participates in case staffing, employment readiness, life skills training, and supports job search as needed.
An additional role of the Family Coach is to assist with crisis and safety planning for individuals experiencing domestic violence. The Family Coach completes program eligibility and if appropriate, issues grant payments. They may also assist with supporting resources and services within the community.
Working conditions
  • Position is fast paced at times.
  • High volume of individual and family contact.
  • You will be exposed to a diverse range of customers and will need to respond with compassion and professionalism through a trauma informed lens.
  • You will have contact with a range of people including some who may be experiencing emotional and financial stress.
  • You will work with domestic violence survivors. These situations may be stressful and understanding self-care and available resources are important.
  • Employee's work is conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites.
  • Hours of work may vary from day to day and may include evenings and weekends.
  • Overtime must be pre-approved.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. If no driver's license, must be able to provide alternate method of transportation. (When needing an ADA accommodation.) Family Coaches work duties take them into the community to work with Oregon families and meet with community partners. They will have access to state vehicles to perform these duties, so an acceptable driving record is required.
