JOB SUMMARY:
The Family Business CenterBIPOC Community Event Engagement Assistant works alongside the Executive Director of the Family Business Center and community partners, including but not limited to NEON, Meda, NDC, MMGSA and UROC, to create Family Business programming targeted to the East Side of St. Paul and the Black Family Business community. The Community Event Engagement Assistant will work directly with the Executive Director and community partners to develop programming and events for Family Businesses in underrepresented communities, with an initial target on Black Family Businesses. This student will be part of biweekly Friday morning Zoom calls, manage communications with community partners, create a recruiting marketing plan for events, and help in the operation of events, likely twice per year. This position will engage with Black and other business owners and community support organizations trying to move the ecosystem of Family Businesses forward. The student will gain valuable experience in leadership development, event management, community engagement, budgeting, and more.
It is anticipated that this position would begin in January 2024 with the option to renew into the next academic year.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The student will be a critical member of the Family Business Center's community engagement work.
- Serve as a liaison between the Family Business Center and community organizations.
- Assist with general support of the Executive Director such as working on marketing and promotional projects, PowerPoints, event messaging, social media assets, etc. to help create outstanding events.
- Manage event communications for the Family Business Center and community partners in relation to events.
- Meet with the Executive Director for weekly check-ins
Attendance at Family Business Breakfast Series events (7-9:30 a.m. in ASC: 2/29, 4/4, 5/9) and Advisor Luncheon events when class schedule allows (11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Minneapolis: 2/22, 5/19)
QUALIFICATIONS
Preference for candidates with experience a desire to serve the Family Business community of Black and other diverse business owners. Demonstrate professionalism in working with business leaders, community organizations, and university administrators. An effective student will demonstrate exceptional project management and time management skills, written communication and presentation skills, and the ability to think big while maintaining an attention to detail. Ability to communicate with empathy, seeking first to understand, while also holding students accountable for their responsibilities. Preferred qualifications: desire to make an impact, a self-starter, Canva (design tool), MS Office (email, calendar management, Word, PPT, Excel) and good follow-through.
Requirements:
- Applicant must be in good academic and conduct standing with the university with a minimum GPA of 2.5
- Must be degree-seeking at the University of St. Thomas
- Must be actively enrolled at least part-time for credit
- Must be able to work between 5-10 hours per week and travel locally based on event creation needs
Most work will be remote as business need allows, expectation is that the student is present for events when class schedule allows
ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
