Job Title: Family Advocate

Location/Work Status: Honolulu, Hawaii with flexible work environment

Job Type: Regular Full Time, Non-Exempt

Compensation: $23.50/hour with competitive benefits package

Summary of Program and Position:

We believe that every child deserves bright and healthy futures. Early education plays a critical role during the important developmental period, especially among disadvantaged children. Investing in early education will have a tremendous impact on life outcomes and provide thriving futures for Hawaii’s young minds.

Federally funded initiatives provide early childhood education and related comprehensive services for low-income parents and children, and children with special needs. Early Head Start (EHS) provides services in centers and in homes to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start (HS) serves children ages three through five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.

The Family Advocate works directly with families in the areas of social service, health, nutrition, and dental care facilitating family engagement and helping them identify and meet their own goals. This position is under the direct supervision of the EHS Child Care Partnership Program Manager or the Family Community Partnership Manager.

Essential Duties:

  • Identifies, recruits, and enrolls families eligible for participation in the EHS, HS or EHS Child Care Partnership programs. Support parents with applying for childcare subsidy, if needed.
  • Engage and communicate, using unconditional positive regard (UPR), with families as partners in their children’s healthy development and school readiness.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with families by identifying strengths and needs using the family success road map and engage families on goal setting.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community partners and strengthen access to resources and training identified as priority goal areas for families.
  • Effectively manage workload and ensure timely accurate record-keeping and documentation.
  • Foster a sense of community and sense of belonging among families to cultivate family leadership and support parent advocacy efforts through participation in family learning parties, parent committee/family engagement network meetings, and/or policy council.
  • Participates actively in assessment and continuous quality improvement activities for the program and agency.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

2. One year paid, full-time experience in human services or related field, required.

3. Credential or Certification in Social Work, Human Services, Family Services, Counseling, or related field, required. OR Able to obtain within 18 months of hire a Credential or Certification in Social Work, Human Services, Family Services, Counseling, or related field, required.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Associate degree in human services or related field, preferred.

Other:

  1. Possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license and daily access to an automobile.
  2. Possesses and maintains proof of no-fault insurance.
  3. Can obtain an acceptable criminal background check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
  4. Can obtain an acceptable CWS background check. upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
  5. Can obtain an acceptable National Sex Offender Registry Check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
  6. Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and TB test upon hire and as requested
