Use your janitorial and maintenance skills as a Facility Custodian!
The Salvation Army Hickman House (HH) is a Seattle-based supportive housing program for survivors of domestic violence and their children. It comprises a 10-unit apartment block where each family occupies its own unit and receives case management services on-site from regular staff Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
This employee will work 40 standard hours per week, providing custodial and janitorial services for the apartment units, office, common areas, and courtyard, and will also drive a program vehicle to interface with donors and collect donations (small household items) and program supplies.
This position is full-time, non-exempt, and located in Seattle, Washington.
Pay Rate: $29.84/hour
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clean the units between occupancy and keep all common areas, including hallways, offices, restrooms, kitchen, and community areas, clean as needed.
  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture, walls, and other surfaces; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean waste receptacles; replace light bulbs, paper, and soap dispensers.
  • Buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard-surface floors, and vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs. Wash accessible interior and exterior windows, clean blinds and window coverings, and launder cleaning rags and dust mops, towels, sheets, comforters, and other linens.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, including pressure washers, leaf blowers, buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture:
  • Lock and unlock assigned areas, secure the building at appropriate times, check for unlocked doors and windows turn on and off lights and heating systems and alarms.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities, such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs outside the facility using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools incidentally.
  • Handle arrangements to dispose of recycling materials and trash.
  • Assist the Program Manager with inventory control and security.
  • Safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment
  • Assist the Program Manager with disposing of old or damaged furniture, appliances, or other items.
  • Investigate damages to the facility and conduct unit inspections with another staff member.
  • Ensure residence security and safety, including compliance with applicable codes and proper functioning of security and fire safety systems.
  • Comply with workplace policies and procedures for risk identification, risk assessment, and risk control and actively participate in workplace health and safety management activities, including correctly utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Provide minor and routine repairs to all units on an emergency basis and to their common areas, such as hallways and stairwells. Minor and routine repairs may include but not be limited to changing light bulbs and unplugging toilets.
  • Refer larger repairs to the Program Manager when necessary.
  • Assist with purchasing, stocking, organizing, and distributing food and other items to residents.
  • Comply with mandatory reporting requirements and laws about the abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults and children.
  • Maintain confidentiality of program location and client information in compliance with applicable law and Salvation Army policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties, which may from time to time be required, at the request of the Program Manager.

Education & Experience

  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in janitorial/cleaning work, building safety, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ability to read, understand, and carry out instructions and procedures for using chemical cleaners, spray insecticides and fumigants, and power equipment.
  • Effective English language communication ability in verbal and written (both machine-produced and handwritten) forms.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication & percentages).
  • Intermediate-level keyboard and computer skills, meaning familiarity with Microsoft Office software, including proficiency with internet, email, word processing, and entering data into spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to maintain visual surveillance of the premises.
  • Experience, ability, and willingness to communicate and work well with staff and residents from various racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds and with various religious beliefs, lifestyles, sexual orientations, age variance, and differing abilities.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.
Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.
Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.
Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.
Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time.
Paid Vacation:

  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
