Metro Transit's Rail Division is seeking to fill one Special Duty Assignment (SDA) Rail Facility Custodian Lead position! Rail Facilities Custodian Leads perform lead duties over other Rail Facilities Custodians and maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of Light Rail Operating Facilities. Lead duties include identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, overseeing and evaluating the work of other custodial crew members. Lead responsibilities may also involve opening and closing work order's using
computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), planning projects, recommending overtime,
providing input on staffing levels, training personnel and the performance of administrative duties. This is a working lead position actively performing cleaning functions as well.

Who May Apply:

This is an internal recruitment as a Special-Duty Assignment for current King County Metro employees who have passed their initial probationary period. This recruitment will fill 1 Special-Duty Assignment in the Rail Division and may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future career service vacancies or Term-limited temporary (TLT)/ Special Duty Assignment (SDA) that may occur over the next twelve months. First consideration will be given to career service employees with a minimum of two years' experience in the Rail Facility Custodian classification. Second consideration will be given to Metro employees that have two years' experience in the custodian classifications. We would encourage all those interested in the Lead Rail Facility Custodian position to apply if they have Metro custodial experience, regardless of their years of experience.
Work Schedule: This is a day shift position. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. The work week is normally 40 hours. Work shift is subject to change and you may work a schedule of 5/8s or other schedules depending on a seniority based pick system. Per the union contract shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. Current hourly rates are: First shift $35.15, Second shift $36.91 and Third shift $37.79.

  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign work for facility custodians, as well as oversee and evaluate their work
  • Monitor the work in progress for Rail Facilities Custodians
  • Clean, sanitize and stock lunchrooms, restrooms, including tables, toilets, showers, sinks and walls
  • Load and unload small equipment, debris, and trash
  • Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions
  • Empty trash and recycle bins
  • Operate and maintain task specific equipment, such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, shop vacs, floor sweepers, scrubbers, and steamers
  • Clean, stock and sanitize restrooms and elevators.
  • Dust, wash, and vacuum surfaces; clean glass windows, including graffiti; clean surfaces up to 10 feet high
  • Set up and arrange furniture for meetings and other events.
  • Operate company assigned vehicles
  • Request and stock various supplies
  • Clean glass and surface areas; remove graffiti
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • Experience and/or training which give evidence of the ability to perform the essential functions of this position
  • Two years of professional cleaning/janitorial experience
  • One year of professional lead experience
  • Familiarity and the ability to navigate and communicate effectively using Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word
  • Skill in providing leadership and direction to others
  • Ability to be detail-oriented, organized, and use initiative to solve common problems
  • Skill in planning and coordinating work
  • Knowledge of basic safety rules and applicable OSHA laws
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others
  • Knowledge and skill of basic janitorial cleaning techniques
  • Knowledge and skill in the use and care of cleaning equipment
  • Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals and safe handling requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions
  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds; ability to interact appropriately with others
  • Ability to work any shift (day, swing, graveyard)


Necessary Special Requirements:

  • A valid Washington State Driver's License and an acceptable driving record. A five-year complete driving abstract will be evaluated.
  • Forklift, Aerial Lift, and First-Aid/CPR certifications must be acquired within 90 days of hire date (training will be provided by employer).

Physical Requirements

Must be able to constantly lift, carry and move objects up to 25 pounds and may be required to move heavier objects. Assistance is available when lifting over 50 pounds.

Selection Process: Applications will be screened to determine whether candidates meet minimum qualifications. The most competitive candidates may be invited to participate in a skills assessment test and a panel interview. Employment offers will be finalized only after candidates have successfully completed physical examinations, reference checks and a driving abstract review.
Testing Information:
There will be an office skills test for this position. Candidates will have 30 minutes to complete the test. This test will involve the use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and an internet browser. Interviews will only be offered to candidates with satisfactory test scores.
