Role Description:
The Facilities Technician plays a pivotal role in embodying the core mission of the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Responsible for the smooth operation of opening and closing KNC facilities, maintaining premises and grounds, and arranging spaces for programs, rentals, and events, this position serves as a crucial link in creating an environment that invites individuals to connect with nature. Collaborating closely with other KNC departments, this role ensures our spaces are functional and conducive to transformative experiences.
Duties:
- Maintain cleanliness, safety, and comfort across KNC facilities and grounds for visitors and staff, including opening and closing procedures.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, and inventory maintenance for facilities and equipment.
- Conduct water monitoring and testing.
- Operate various vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to: tractors, snow plows, skid-steer, utility vehicles, golf carts and landscaping equipment.
- Support volunteer projects and set up spaces for events, rentals, and programs.
- Provide assistance to weekend staff when necessary.
- Travel offsite to clean Nature’s Way Preschool and Heronwood Field Station as assigned and possibly in evenings after classes are completed, if needed.
- Maintain appropriate security.
- Troubleshoot HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems as needed.
- Be available for on-call emergencies as scheduled.
- Perform other duties aligned with the KNC mission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
- Experience with operating, maintaining and repairing farm tractors, plow trucks, skid steers, passenger vehicles and other small power equipment.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people.
- Displays a pleasant customer service attitude.
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to be insured under KNC's vehicle insurance policy.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.
Physical Factors/Working Conditions:
- Able to work occasional weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Ability to respond to on-call emergencies within an hour.
- Able to work indoors and outdoors in rough terrain and in adverse conditions.
- The ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly, stand and walk for long periods of time, reach, bend, kneel and squat.
