What you will do
Let's do this. Let's change the world. In this vital role as Executive Director, Research you will lead and oversee programs addressing weight-related concerns. Your responsibilities will include implementing the strategic direction for the pipeline, ensuring the quality and impact of research outputs, and managing staff. Additionally, you will represent the organization in external forums and establish partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
This role will include global leadership of an asset within Amgen's cardiometabolic group. The Executive Director will report into the Scientific Vice President, Research.
Responsibilities
  • Implement the organization's research strategy and vision in alignment with its mission and goals
  • Lead Research in the cardiometabolic/obesity therapeutic area, ensuring operational and scientific excellence
  • Foster a culture of innovation and creativity, while ensuring effective collaboration among enabling functions, therapeutic teams, and locations
  • Supervise and mentor a research team, including responsibilities such as hiring, performance evaluation, and professional development
  • Communicate and present scientific and technical advice both within the function and across departments, both internally and externally
  • Apply knowledge of the drug discovery and development process to guide the workgroup
  • Solve complex technical problems within a broad discipline, demonstrating ingenuity and creativity
  • Evaluate progress towards goals and milestone achievements for the workgroup with limited oversight.
  • Lead teams contributing to the achievement of department project team objectives.
  • Initiate, progress, and deliver programs and new platforms
  • Ensure the excellence, relevance, and timeliness of research outputs, including reports, publications, presentations
  • Monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of research projects and programs, reporting to the board of directors and donors.
  • Manage the research budget and resources, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with external partners, including academic institutions, government agencies
  • Communicate and disseminate research findings and recommendations to various audiences

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of research experience OR
  • Master's degree & 10 years of research experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree & 12 years of research experience AND
  • Six (6) years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD degree in a relevant field, such as cardiometabolic
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in leading and conducting research, with a focus on cardiometabolic conditions; strong experience in obesity is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in generating quality and impactful research outputs, including the development of clinical candidates in the cardiometabolic and the publication of peer-reviewed articles
  • Research & development experience within industry is strongly preferred
  • Strategic leadership, management, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within diverse and multidisciplinary teams
  • Proven capability for independent research, innovative thinking, and a solid understanding of human genetics
  • Track record of providing mentorship and guidance to staff within the same function
  • Proficient in utilizing new technologies for investigating both human and non-human biology
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex datasets

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $271,118 - $322,291.
