In this vital role, the Executive Director, Advocacy Relations is responsible for shaping and leading an integrated global advocacy strategy across Amgen’s portfolio with patient advocacy organizations, professional associations, and other key stakeholders in the healthcare environment. This position will drive the vision for Advocacy Relations and associated capabilities as a priority pillar of the Corporate Affairs function and strengthen the global impact of Amgen’s patient-first efforts with the goal of being a trusted partner of choice for patient communities around the world. This role will report to the Associate Vice President, Global Commercial Operations Product Communications and Advocacy Relations, and it will be based in the US with expectation of travel to Thousand Oaks headquarters, domestic and international congresses, and key events.
Key responsibilities for the Executive Director will be to lead and inspire a high-performing advocacy team and spearhead a global advocacy engagement strategy that is aligned with the companies’ priorities. This position will oversee external relationships and collaborative partnerships built on the values of trust, respect, and transparency so that patients and providers can systematically engage decision makers in all aspects of clinical development, healthcare delivery, policy, and access.
The Executive Director will lead and contribute to the execution of strategic, high impact advocacy initiatives with measurable outcomes across Amgen’s scientific areas of interest – from our early development programs through the approval and appropriate use of our medicines. Emphasis will be placed on advancing policies and practices in support of achieving health equity so that all people have an opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Lastly, this position will champion innovative ways to strengthen the patient voice and deepen the understanding of patient experiences across the organization, including through authentic patient storytelling and meaningful opportunities for employees to engage directly with patients and caregivers.
The Executive Director will bring leadership and external engagement skills, people management experience, and be able to role model cross-functional collaboration. This role requires an ability to work collaboratively across therapeutic areas and functions, and the candidate will be a member of global and US business leadership teams.
The Executive Director can effectively communicate with business acumen to both internal and external stakeholders; lead with passion and authenticity; understand the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape and anticipate when to engage the advocacy community; and demonstrate knowledge of key external and internal trends or issues affecting patient and consumer engagement.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree & 6 years of Advocacy Relations experience OR
Master’s degree & 10 years of Advocacy Relations experience OR
Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of Advocacy Relations experience AND
6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in the fields of cardiovascular disease, obesity, oncology, and inflammation.
15 years’ experience in Corporate Affairs related positions with increasingly progressive and roles in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or other industry area with regulatory oversight is preferred.
10+ years of experience with professional medical societies and patient advocacy groups, including 5+ years working for a global pharmaceutical company as primary liaison to professional medical associations and patient advocacy groups.
Corporate Affairs and/or Advocacy Relations thought leadership and the ability to build credibility with the senior management team and the organization. This includes facilitating discussions and promoting collaboration across multiple parties; creating and executing advocacy strategies with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; and demonstrating sensitivity to diverse groups of people both internal and external with the ability to manage many different opinions and perspectives, including tolerance for ambiguity.

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $267,172 to $305,970.
