Job description

Summary:

The Executive Communications Writer is a member of the Marketing and Communications department at the Child Mind Institute. Their primary responsibility is creating written materials on behalf of executive leadership to advance organizational priorities. Writing must convey the emotional appeal of the mission of the Child Mind Institute and connect effectively with varied audiences (i.e. parents, educators, thought leaders, board members, employees). It must meet high editorial standards for impact, clarity, literacy, and empathy. The role involves working directly with organization leadership and various stakeholders.

Reporting to the Media and Talent Relations Director in the Marketing and Communications department, this is an exempt, full-time, hybrid position split between remote work and our Midtown, NYC office.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic communications planning: Develop messaging strategy for key initiatives, and work with leadership on long-term planning, including development of Executive Communications calendar and message development.
  • Produce outstanding written materials: Develop a variety of written materials including talking points, opinion pieces and editorials, speeches, web content, press releases, internal and external correspondence on behalf of organization leadership, presentation decks, the organization’s annual report and other materials. Writing must convey the emotional appeal of the mission of the Child Mind Institute and connect effectively with varied audiences (i.e. parents, educators, thought leaders, board members, employees). It must meet high editorial standards for impact, clarity, literacy, and empathy.
  • Ensure the organization message remains strong and consistent across channels.
  • Internal communications consist of messaging to the organizations 250+ employees who work as clinicians, researchers, and non-profit staff. This also includes overseeing the staff newsletter.
  • External communications consist of messaging to/for the board of directors, senior executives, donors, partners, supporters, patient families, thought leaders, and the media.
  • Perform special projects or assignments as required, including pitching in to support Executive events and/ or shoots.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Public Relations, Journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5-10 years professional experience in journalism, nonprofit communications, internal/corporate communications or a related field in which content creation and writing were the primary responsibilities.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented; capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Ability to pivot quickly as new priorities emerge.
  • Exceptionally sound judgment, decision-making, and team-building skills.
  • Experience in writing/editing/content creation for organization leadership and coaching executive leadership on communications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with mental health or health content preferred.
  • Experience translating scientific and clinical topics for lay audiences preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships and partnerships with a variety of people.
  • Entrepreneurial, creative, and proactive, with a love for writing and editing in service of a mission-driven organization and its audiences.
  • Passion for the Child Mind Institute mission.

The salary range for the position is posted. Factors such as candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations affect the salary offered within this range.
