Job description

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to operate a variety of City equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance, and repairs related to the water distribution and sewer collection systems; perform a variety of tasks including water and sewer maintenance related to construction. Successful performance helps ensure safe and efficient Public Works services, as well as a positive public image for the City.Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for maintaining the water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems throughout the city, which reflects a positive image of the Public Works Department and the city, and it ensures a clean and safe environment for all customers and citizens.

  • Operates assigned equipment in the maintenance and repair of the city water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems, city roads/streets, drainage systems, including gasoline and diesel-powered automotive and heavy equipment, light to medium duty jet trucks, boom trucks, CCTV trucks, backhoes, tractors, excavators, packers, rollers and various machines, tools, and power equipment;
  • Cleans gutters, sidewalks, catch basins, sewer mains, drop inlets, and facilities;
  • Performs daily inspections and maintenance on city vehicles and equipment used on the job; documents and records any needed repairs;
  • Checks and maintains equipment, trucks, trailers, and power tools;
  • Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc., on job site.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Skill in proper operation and basic repair of machinery and trucks used in assigned section.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous materials and situations and respond according to training and city policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate equipment and perform duties under a variety of weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety standards and practices applicable to work being conducted.
  • Knowledge of State Motor Vehicles Laws.
  • Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and efficiently carry them out with general supervision.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving heavy manual labor.
  • Effective analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organizational, and time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituents.
  • Attention to detail and adaptability to a changing environment is extremely important as well as dependability.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to one hundred (100) pounds, standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day, climbing poles, bending, crouching, or stooping, and using tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • One (1) to three (3) years experience of operating heavy equipment in the City's Water Distribution and Sanitary Sewer Collection Systems.
  • Must have some training in preventive maintenance programs for heavy equipment.
  • Possession of a valid State of Georgia CDL Class (B) Driver's License; or must obtain CDL class (B) within six months of employment.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
