ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (TOXICOLOGIST)

Job Summary:

Perform evaluations of pollutants or hazards that affect the health of the population. Using knowledge of various scientific disciplines, may collect, synthesize, study, report, and recommend action based on data derived from measurement or observations of air, soil, water, and other sources.

Job Duties:

  • Design, conduct, and report on public health assessments and public health consultations, including toxicological investigations and related activities on the health impacts of exposure to toxic substances in the environment statewide.
  • Compile, review, analyze, and interpret environmental contaminant data, laboratory results, and health outcome data to identify possible sources of contamination and determine potential health effects and public health risks.
  • Answer technical questions regarding data, trends, or results from environmental health assessments.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, local health departments, or tribal communities regarding illness associated with exposures to toxicants from hazardous waste sites.
  • Develop educational materials and fact sheets, and educate and speak to affected communities and local health professionals about site contamination and potential health effects.
  • Support program efforts to implement the Arizona Choose Safe Places Program and address environmental health hazards at childcare facilities.
  • Participate in local, regional, and national monthly calls and conferences. Interact with the public via meetings, telephone, and field visits responding to community health concerns & analyzing health outcome data.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff, partners, and stakeholders in the fields of epidemiology, toxicology, and environmental quality.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
  • Environmental/health outcome data collection procedures
  • theory, practices, methods, and techniques of environmental health
  • Environmental/human health risk assessment methods
  • Performance Management (PM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), and Lean methodologies.

Skill in:
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating environmental and statistical data
  • Lead meetings with internal and external team members and stakeholders.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on a task order offer
  • Substantial oral and written communication skills

Selective Preference(s):

Master's degree or higher in environmental health, environmental sciences, public health, toxicology, or related field with 2 years of work-related experience.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will contribute to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27-week wait period for contributions to begin.
