AZTEC is seeking resumes from motivated and qualified environmental scientists and geologists to fill a full-time position in our Phoenix, Arizona office location. Candidates must have necessary qualifications and have documented experience as described in the sections below. Candidates must also be able to foster a positive work environment and can organize and handle multiple assignments, and manage and work well alone, with other company technical staff, or with subcontractors as needed. Fieldwork will be required, and travel away from Phoenix and/or out of state, and periods of overnight stays may also be required on occasion.

This role will provide support for ongoing and new projects addressing hazardous materials-related environmental concerns for private and public-sector clients in Arizona, California, and the greater Southwest. Primary duties will include fieldwork and technical report writing, but this position will also support project development (i.e., scopes of work, proposals, and project budgeting), strategy development, and promoting a high level of technical competence in our work products.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Conducting Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs, Preliminary Initial Site Assessments (PISAs), and other due diligence related activities
  • Conducting asbestos surveys and lead paint surveys for transportation related projects, property transactions, and demolition
  • Management and field oversight of subcontractors, sub-consultants, vendors, etc., in conformance with the written scope of work and associated agreements
  • Technical report writing that includes presenting key findings, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Support with generation of proposals and cost estimates, and other business development pursuits
  • Develop scopes of work, sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and other plans for fieldwork
  • Support for performing field studies and tasks such as data gathering and sampling activities at sites that may include indoor air (IAQ), soil vapor, soil and groundwater sampling; vapor intrusion assessments; soil borings and sampling, preparation of borings logs and cross-sections; well installation and groundwater monitoring; regulatory compliance services; and various permit acquisition

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field of study
  • An advanced degree is a plus but not required
  • 3 to 8 years of experience in performing the various job responsibilities listed above
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong work ethic
  • Well-developed technical writing skills, ability to effectively communicate in multimedia formats, capability with Microsoft Office 365 suite of programs, including Teams, and use of Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam
  • Strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet tight project deadlines and manage multiple task requests simultaneously, while adhering to approved scope, budget, schedule, and expected quality standards
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and in team environments
  • As needed, willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions and for extended periods in a variety of conditions including but not limited to sites containing hazardous substances/waste. May be standing for extended periods of time wearing required PPE at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots, safety vest, safety glasses, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector certification and experience conducting asbestos surveys
  • AHERA Asbestos Contractor Supervisor certification, and experience conducting asbestos abatement oversight, clearance sampling and reporting
  • EPA Lead-Based Paint Inspector certification and experience conducting lead paint surveys
  • GIS and/or AutoCAD experience
  • Experience conducting fieldwork and applicable reporting associated with UST closure assessments, and LUST and WQARF investigations
  • Knowledge of applicable ADEQ and EPA regulations for conduct of similar work, including NEPA-related activities
  • Knowledge of applicable California regulations for conduct of similar work (especially southern California), including CEQA-related activities
  • Familiarity with FHWA, ADOT, USFWS, AGFD, BLM, USFS, MCDOT and other federal, state and local rules and regulations pertaining to the environment

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances.

Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
