SUMMARY

The purpose is to ensure that Baxters North America complies with the Environmental, Safety, Health & Security standards of the food industry and State/Federal regulatory agencies and laws. Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for all personnel by administering educational materials and comprehensive safety programs. As part of the leadership team, they will be expected to promote a high-performance safety culture and deliver risk reduction across the factory/warehouse operations. They will be asked to lead and support incident investigations that identify root cause and develop countermeasures that prevent re-occurrence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Ensure organizational compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and corporate environmental, health and safety laws, regulations, policies and guidelines.
  • Ensure working environment for employees that has low injury risk due to conditions, equipment, and behaviors.
  • Ensure EHS inclusion in LEAN/Continuous Improvement/TPM processes.
  • Be the face of EHS through constant communication to employees and staff through daily tours, meetings, training and coaching.
  • Be a part of cross-functional teams that maintain facility infrastructure and building security.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain accuracy of facility regulatory compliance programs and company EHS process. Compliance with critical programs such as: control of hazardous energy, chemical hygiene, HAZMAT, PITO, confined space, electrical, fire protection & personal protective equipment.
  • Monitors and ensures completion of corrective actions due to scheduled internal audits, organizational risk assessments, root cause analyses of incidents and external inspections.
  • Provides support and guidance to location leadership team when leading incident investigations. Assuring the report’s timely completion, identification of root cause, corrective actions and escalation within 48 hours.
  • Responsible for departmental work plan that includes: contingency planning and emergency preparedness, environmental programs & infrastructure/life safety permit related inspections.
  • Assists EHS Manager with strategies in respiratory protections, industrial hygiene, air quality & temperature extremes.
  • Support department manager in matters of Occupational Health & Wellness such as: workers comp claim management, physical job evaluations & return to duty programs.
  • Owns the Computer Based Training program, training curriculum and other methods of electronic and visual communication utilized by the EHS department.
  • Resource to engineering and maintenance for chemical review, equipment reviews and on-site contractor approval.
  • Issues EHS communications including: incident trend data analysis, departmental summaries, feedback from behavioral audits, single point lessons (Safety Alerts) and others.
  • Primary contact for regulatory inspections, permits and licensing in relation the EHS programs and insurance.
  • Primary contact to the third-party Security Service, alarm monitoring system, building access system and video cameras
  • Owns coaching and feedback to participants in the Behavior Based Safety Process
  • Provides leadership to First Responders and Emergency Coordinators during incidents
  • Participate in employee on-boarding process, orientation, authorized LOTO training, Forklift and Pallet Jack skills verification.
  • Assures EHS involvement with the Business Operating System, LEAN/Continuous Improvement, 5s & TPM.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A combination of/or:
    • At a minimum associates degree from college or university in Safety, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene/Safety or a related field.
    • 3- 5 years relevant experience in an EHS or related field in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of material flow and manufacturing operations.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office and various software programs.
  • Previous experience working with both internal as well as external customers a plus.

WORK SCHEDULE - HOURS

This position is full time and expected to work 40 hours minimum during the week. This position may require work during 3rd shift and 2nd shift and variable hours may occur on the weekend. Because this position is involved with employee, building and environmental safety this position could receive incident notifications after-hours.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, associates and general public. This position will also be involved in employee coaching, disciplinary action cases and occupational health situations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical principals to tasks involving statistical analysis, data reliability/validity, data correlation and sampling techniques. Understands mathematic/geometric principals behind mechanical systems and material transport systems.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.

The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. This position will also require climbing ladders and stairs. This individual must also be able to tolerate various temperature and weather extremes. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
