Introduction Blurb:
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Division of Environmental Health is seeking an energetic and proactive Environmental Health professional to serve as a flexibly staffed Environmental Health Officer (EHO) 1/2 in our Fairbanks office.
This position is responsible for conducting inspections and planning reviews of retail food and public facilities (pool and spa operations and body art shops), and inspections of food processors, including seafood manufacturers. The work includes traveling across Interior and Northern Alaska to remote communities. This position requires the application of a broad base of Environmental Health knowledge. Because experience for this position is difficult to gain in Alaska, our program offers extensive training and professional growth opportunities.
Mission & Culture:
The Division of Environmental Health (EH) provides clear standards and technical assistance to ensure environmental protection, safe food, and safe drinking water for all Alaskans. The Food Safety and Sanitation program's mission is to protect public health at regulated food, seafood, and public facilities. Our vision is to collaboratively work with these facilities to prevent illness, injury, and loss of life caused by unsafe sanitary practices. Environmental Health Officers work directly with regulated establishments- educating on food safety and sanitation standards, communicating with establishment owners and employees to ensure these standards are being implemented. This is a boot on the ground position that can truly make a difference in
our community.
Team Benefits:
This is real public health work where you will feel like you are making a difference every day in your work. This position has lots of opportunities for travel and training. We invest a lot in our employees' education and professional growth.

  • Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.
