Job description

From the river to the foothills, and the farm to the forest, Boise Environmental Education invites you to explore our wild community, develop a new sense of place, and discover the lessons to be learned from nature.
Environmental Education Coordinator:
  • Manages and coordinates all Environmental Education Programs at Boise Urban Garden School and other facilities.
  • Responsible for educational efforts, service learning, volunteer programs and special events.
  • Works with staff to plan, coordinate, and promote Environmental Education Programs, activities, and services for the City's youth, adults, older citizen groups, under-served populations, and families.
  • Manages the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and budgets of relevant facilities.
  • Work requires independent judgment, initiative, creative problem-solving, and quality customer service.
Coordinates and delivers Environmental Education and volunteer programs for youth, adults, and families. Works with Education Program Manager to establish goals and objectives that meet relevant departmental and City initiatives. Conducts regular assessments to ensure relevant, high quality, mission-based activities. Develops and updates curriculum, event-based lessons, community programs, volunteer offerings, and presentations to meet the changing needs of a variety of audiences. Develops lesson and event schedules and coordinates with speakers and partner organizations to ensure excellent delivery and service. (50%)
Serves as the day-to-day contact for facility rental and reservations. Ensures compliance with all relevant departmental policies and procedures. Coordinates maintenance of the facility with internal partners to identify and solve issues related to buildings and grounds. (15%)
Supervises and manages temporary or term-limited staff including initiating a hiring process, providing training, and evaluating performance and conduct. Works with Education Program Manager to ensure adequate staffing resources and identifies needed resources (15%)
Markets educational and volunteer programs through various traditional and on-line media. Coordinates marketing effort with internal and external partners. Markets educational and volunteer programs and develops marketing goals in coordination with internal and external partners. (10%)
Manages facility and education budgets and seeks internal and external funding sources to meet mission-related goals. Serves as primary contact for donors and grantors to ensure continued positive relationships with facility supporters and partners. (10%)

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Education, Environmental Studies, Education, Natural Resources Management, or related field. Three years professional outdoor Environmental Education experience leading youth and adults, with at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
Working knowledge of the principles, standards, practices, information sources and trends in the field of Environmental Education Programming for youth and adults. Knowledge in environmental studies, including physical, chemical, and biological sciences. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement large scale Education Programs targeted to diverse audiences. Ability to conduct gap analysis and provide solutions to identified problems. Experience managing budgets, contracts, and applying for grants.
Ability to respectfully interact with coworkers, internal and external partners, general public, and members of the media. Must communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance. Complete assignments in a timely fashion. Understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations. Maintain prompt and regular attendance. Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record. Individuals must be capable of hiking short distances and leading groups through uneven terrain.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Master's degree in Education, Communications, Science or related field. Proven experience in teaching, group facilitation, public speaking, formal training in an environmental degree program, and the ability and willingness to interact and engage a variety of stakeholders and children of all ages. Experience managing volunteers. Experience in project management and development in a related position.
Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid State Issued driver's license.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is occasionally pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria and bodily fluids. Must be able to walk trails and uneven ground while leading lessons. The Foothills Learning Center is located in the Boise foothills and is surrounded by local plants, including sagebrush.
This position works: normal business hours. However, hours are occasionally dictated by Education Programs which are often scheduled evenings and weekends.Employment Type: Full Time Regular
