The OpportunityWSDOT's Technology Services Division (TSD) is currently seeking an entry-Level Network Engineer to fill an IT Network & Telecommunications vacancy located in Tumwater, WA. In this role, you will provide daily operations and support for the organization's network infrastructure.
The Network Infrastructure encompasses a range of hardware components, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, access control appliances, and both fiber optic and copper cabling. The primary objective of this role is to learn and work under supervision, gradually progressing towards independent handling of networking tasks. The mission of WSDOT TSD is to provide secure, reliable, and cost-effective technology solutions that enable transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality for people and businesses. What to ExpectThis position is stationed in Tumwater but may be required to travel statewide maintaining services for over 230 sites in support of all agency business units (e.g., HQ Programs, Regions, Ferries and Tolling Divisions, etc.). Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Network Engineer will:* Install and maintain network hardware under supervision of senior network technicians.* Assist in the planning and execution of network upgrades and expansions as directed.* Perform site surveys to determine topology, cabling, and environmental requirements and layouts.* Travel to remote fiber vaults and cabinets to document locations, layouts, and configurations. * Provide clear, concise, and accurate, individual site implementation documentation that contributes to agency-wide LAN, WAN, and fiber optic decision making and inventory management. * Participating in regular meetings and providing updates on network-related tasks and projects.* Work with the Network Management team to use SolarWinds Orion and other network monitoring tools to identify problems and log and resolve issues.* Respond to outage notifications as assigned by senior network staff.* Support maximal uptime of agency network infrastructure field devices. * Provide timely input, feedback, and installation/replacement to ensure service restoration as quickly as possible. QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:* An associate's degree and two (2) years of experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; OR four (4) years of experience in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.* Knowledge of TCP/IP, HTTP, TFTP, DHCP, DNS, NTP,OSI, SSH, HTTPS, SNMP, FTP, TELNET, SMTP, SSL, PPP protocols and others.* Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations, solving problems, and making decisions. * Ability to communicate effectively in writing or verbally to a diverse set of customers and peers. * A valid driver's license.
