Position Title: English Language Learner (ELL) Tutor in
Location: Academia Bilingüe at Three Fires Elementary
Reports To: Principal
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Union Affiliation: HESPA
Number of positions: 2
Wages: (2023-24) $18.10 - 19.24/hour
Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 30 hours/week (Specific schedule TBD)
Duration: Ten Months (Student School Days; August - June as scheduled)
SUMMARY:
The English Language Learner Tutor assists, supports and works closely with teachers, paraprofessionals and other team members in providing educational benefits for students with limited English language proficiency.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Facilitates communication/translation between parents, students and teachers, as needed.
  • Assists with administering State mandated and district/building/class level assessments, including mid-term and final examinations.
  • Ability to work with individual teachers to support children with limited English proficiency in the general education classroom.
  • Continually progress monitor ELL students in the District.
  • Participates in Kindergarten Open House, Kindergarten Registration, and/or assisting students with course scheduling at the secondary level.
  • Regular, in-person attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Fluent in the English language - speaking, reading, writing and listening.
  • Strong understanding of the English language; including grammar, phonics, sentence structure, comprehension and speaking skills.
  • Experience with a second language. Fluency preferred but not required.
  • Strong one-on-one student support skills required.
  • Ability to work in a team with teachers and other ELL tutors.

High school diploma (or equivalent); and must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
  • Obtain an Associate's Degree (or higher); or
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
  1. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics or
  2. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

The State Board of Education has approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:
  1. ETS ParaPro Assessment. A passing score of 460 is required. OR
  2. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification - Basic Skills (MTTC) [http://www.mttc.nesinc.com/] A passing score on the Basic Skills Test MTTC is required. OR
  3. SAT (taken on or after March 5, 2016) - Scores on the following sections are required:
  • Evidence-based Reading & Writing - 480
  • Mathematics - 530 OR
  • ACT (taken between January 1, 1989 and October 1, 2017) - Scores on the following sections are required:
    • Reading - 22
    • Combined English/Writing - 22
    • Mathematics - 22 OR
  • Michigan Merit Examination (MME) (taken between January 1, 2007 and January 31, 2015) - Scores on the following sections are required:
    • Reading - 1108
    • Writing - 1129
    • Mathematics - 1116 OR
  • WorkKeys (taken before June 1, 2017) - Scores on the following sections are required:
    • Reading for Information (Level 4 minimum),
    • Applied Mathematics (Level 4 minimum) and
    • Writing (Level 3 minimum) BEFORE June 1, 2017 will still meet the state requirements.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    • Fluent in the English language - speaking, reading, writing and listening.
    • Strong understanding of the English language; including grammar, phonics, sentence structure, comprehension and speaking skills.
    • Experience with a second language. Fluency preferred but not required.
    • Strong one-on-one student support skills required.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff, parents, and the general public consistent with the duties of this position.
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.
    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position.
    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of this position.
    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form consistent with the duties of this position.
    QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
    • Knowledge of the W-APT, WIDA assessments preferred.
    • Experience working with students in a tutorial setting.
    • Experience with the Rosetta Stone English program preferred.
    • Computer experience (ability to look up websites and utilize the online assessment program).
    • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies.
    • Ability to work with individuals and groups of students to support academics and behavior management.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff members and the school community.
    • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and the community.
    • Ability to portray a professional demeanor in appearance and behavior.
    • Ability to learn new skills, flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.
    • Ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing and mathematics, science and social studies.
    • Must have patience working with children.
    • Accurate and detail oriented.
    • Ability to work well with others and follow written and oral directions and completes assignments given.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, speaking clearly and communicating thoughts succinctly.
    • Excellent grammatical, spelling and punctuation skills.

    The work environment is normally indoors with controlled climate conditions. Occasionally the employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and therefore subject to varying weather conditions, for purposes of accomplishing the essential functions of this job.
