English Language Learner Instructional Assistant (2 Positions)

Reports to: District ELL Coordinator in conjunction with the Director of Curriculum
Niles Community Schools is looking for a dynamic English Language Learner Instructional Assistant. Highly-effective communication skills and professionalism required for daily interaction with a diverse workforce, student population, building administration and community.
Summary:
To assist, support, and work closely with teachers, administrators, and other team members in providing an appropriate learning environment for students. The primary responsibility is to provide services to English Language Learners.
Qualifications:
- All Instructional Assistant must meet one of the following standards to be considered highly qualified in the state of Michigan:
- Completed two years of college (60 hours) OR
- Obtained an Associate's Degree or higher OR
- Pass a formal assessment of knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics, within 30 days of employment or as directed by the building principal. Currently, our district uses the WorkKeys Proficiency Certificate for this standard. This assessment is delivered through Lake Michigan College or Southwest Michigan College. The initial assessment will be at the employee's expense.
- Fluent in English and Spanish
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (non-prioritized):
- Assist in planning and implementation of educational activities. The ELL Aide, as directed by the District EL Coordinator and teacher, will be responsible for the supervision of the student(s) and will direct, assist, and instruct the student(s) as appropriate in a school setting.
- Provide personalized bilingual instructional support that is compatible with the abilities, needs, and learning characteristics of each student under the guidance of the district EL coordinator
- Help improve student achievement on the WIDA Access
- Become familiar with the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)
