New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.


There is one position available that will be filled at either the EPST I or EPST II classification.

The Evans Materials Unit provides accurate, responsive, and timely materials expertise and technical support to assure high-quality and cost-efficient materials for the design, construction, and maintenance of Colorado's Transportation System.
About the Position
This position conducts testing on a variety of construction and maintenance materials, both in the Region Lab and in mobile testing laboratories. During the typical "paving season", the position primarily performs flexible pavement testing and support for outlying projects utilizing the Region's mobile testing laboratories, as well as equipment management and maintenance of said mobile labs. During the typical winter months, this position shifts to the Region Lab in Evans to primarily conduct Materials Testing on a variety of construction & maintenance materials developed in the preliminary pavement design phase. This position may also check documentation of construction finals as outlined in the applicable CDOT Field Materials Manual.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Perform acceptance testing and project support from a mobile laboratory; requires frequent overnight travel to throughout northeastern Colorado, especially to the eastern plains;
  • Perform Materials Testing on a variety of construction and maintenance materials at the main lab in Evans; testing includes a broad variety of materials including significant soils testing for pavement design;
  • Maintain and keep laboratory equipment calibrated and in good working order; obtain parts and supplies and make repairs as needed;
  • Arrange for mobile laboratory transport from location to location, including site review, preparing equipment and contents for travel, as well as electrical, water, and data connections;
  • Review data on construction and research project test results for completeness, accuracy, and conformity to specifications;
  • Re-test materials when needed and report any problems to the Region Lab Manager, Project Engineers, and/or Project Consultants;
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily Monday-Friday 40-hour work week
  • Frequent overnight travel during construction season, requiring reporting for work in remote locations with the mobile laboratory
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Work in variety of weather conditions near high-speed traffic
  • Works with variety of hazardous materials
There is one position available that will be filled at either the EPST I or ESPT II classification level. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
  • Pay range for EPST I is $2,292-$2,375.07/biweekly.
  • Pay range for EPST II is $2,406.46-$2,604.92/biweekly.

Minimum Qualifications for ESPT I Level
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
AND
  • At least four years of experience in monitoring construction projects by conducting Materials Testing, project inspection, and documentation.
Special Qualifications for EPST I Level
Must have the following certifications at time of application:
  • CAPA Asphalt Technician Certification in Levels A and B
  • WAQTC Embankment & Base Technician

Minimum Qualifications for ESPT II Level
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
AND
  • At least five years of experience in monitoring construction projects by conducting Materials Testing, project inspection, and documentation.
Special Qualifications for EPST II Level
Must have the following certifications at time of application:
  • CAPA Asphalt Technician Certification in Levels A, B, and C
  • ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Levels 1 and 2, or as an alternative ACI Concrete Strength
  • WAQTC Embankment & Base Technician

Substitutions for both EPST I and EPST II Levels:
  • Coursework from an accredited college or university in Construction Project Management, Engineering, or Chemistry will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. If using education to qualify, you must submit a copy of your transcript that shows your name, the name of your college or university, and your completed coursework and credit hours.

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.
Conditions of Employment

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • Must obtain certification through CDOT's School of Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation within 12 months of hire.
  • If hired at the EPST I level, would be expected to obtain CAPA Asphalt Technician Level C and ACI Concrete Strength Testing certifications within one year of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill be an experienced Materials Tester and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with the CDOT Field Materials Manual and the Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures;
  • Knowledge and experience with CDOT specific Materials Testing, AASHTO/ASTM standards, or AMRL and CCRL accreditation programs;
  • Certifications in WAQTC Embankment & Base, LabCAT Level A, B, and C; ACI Lab Testing Tech 1 & 2 or Concrete Strength, and CDOT's School of Radiological Safety and Nuclear Gauge Operation or similar Radiation Safety Officer;
  • Knowledge and experience inspecting, calibrating, and maintaining testing equipment;
  • Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering project plans;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner;
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability;
  • Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving ability;
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;
  • Passion for safety;
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Google Applications (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets), SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
