Description
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire Student Assistants to assist in field surveying in a field setting, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor in the Office of Surveys. The Student Assistant is expected to achieve practical experience in work tasks related to the field of land surveying.
As a Survey Student Assistant, the incumbent is expected to become proficient in the following competencies as described below in order to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, while adhering to and promoting the Department's Mission, Vision, Values, Strategic Imperatives and Goals. Effective development of the identified Core Competencies fosters the advancement of the following Leadership Competencies: Change Commitment, Risk Appetite, Self-Development/Growth, Conflict Management, Relationship Building, Organizational Awareness, Communication, Strategic Perspective, and Results Driven.

Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI Student Assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the fundamentals of land surveying. This includes knowledge of mathematics and basic science as it applies to the land surveying profession.
  • The following are knowledge, abilities, and analytical requirements necessary for this position.
    • Ability to learn the collection and operation of the Department's data collection systems with regard to field collection methods and if directed, the software applications used.
    • Ability to multi-task, adapt to changes in priorities, and complete tasks or projects with short notice.
    • Ability to maintain a sustained mental alertness and concentration for prolonged periods of time while working around heavy equipment and under variable traffic conditions.
  • Possess a valid California Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
  • Previous experience surveying topographic areas or working in a field setting.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in making and recording survey measurements needed for the development of field notes and electronic files as well as assists in the final preparation of such notes and files, subject to review by the supervisor.
  • Assists the supervisor in performing calculations necessary to make field checks and measurements of drainage facilities, reference points, topographic features, etc.
  • Assists the supervisor in performing the necessary survey calculations needed to ensure proper project setup and accurate data collection.
  • Assists supervisor with the electronic processing of field survey data, when necessary.
    • Assists the supervisor in performing and evaluating record data research.
  • Assists the supervisor in the proper operation, maintenance and adjustment of all survey instruments used by the survey crew, such as electronic levels, total stations, GPS equipment, remote sensing equipment and other necessary equipment used in the setting and collecting of survey data.
    • Perform manual labor such as digging, clearing of brush, setting of durable monuments, pipe driving, removal of asphalt, construction of concrete monuments, and any other work necessary to recover or establish survey monuments; assists in the correct placement of survey control stakes.
  • Assists the supervisor by preparing for the daily assignment, including stocking material onto vehicles, as required, to accomplish the task. Reports any personal injury acquired during course of work to the supervisor immediately.
  • Assists with the research, verification and adjustment of survey data, and if directed, may include performing and interpreting survey calculations.
  • Apply and utilize basic principles of trigonometry as used in plane and geodetic surveying and within the California Coordinate System.
  • Assists the survey crew in accurately setting, collecting, describing, calculating and recovering of survey monuments and topographic features in a field setting.
    • Other responsibilities include assisting the survey crew in completing tasks in a safe and timely manor and requires immediate reporting to the supervisor when unsafe conditions exist, or when known or suspected data errors exist.

Physical Requirements
A Survey Student Assistant has normal assignments within District 7, which includes Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Since the Land Surveying department delivers many different work products, changes in work assignments are frequent and unpredictable. Since the Physical environment is directly linked to work assignments, any or all of the following conditions may be met:
  • Must be able to transport equipment, tools and materials up to 60 pounds over various types of terrain to and from the work site as directed by a supervisor or lead worker.
  • Frequent, substantial or unexpected workload changes which can dictate rescheduling or reassigning of work as needed.
  • Must travel to remote work assignments for various lengths of time within a work day as projects dictate.
  • Must be able to transport survey equipment, hand tools and materials in an outdoor setting through various types of terrain as needed to complete the necessary task.
  • Requires frequent bending, stooping and kneeling.
  • Must be able to exercise power grasping, repetitive motion and manual dexterity when using hand tools and survey equipment such as hammers, digging bars and shovels to perform routine tasks.
  • Must be able to use a pick, digging bar, or a shovel to excavate material in order to set or recover monuments;
  • Requires operating a motor vehicle for prolonged periods of time within a work day.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office or in a field environment.
Assignments are outdoors in various types of terrain and weather conditions and include exposure to dirt, noise and walking on uneven surfaces.
Assignments are usually within close proximity to significant automotive traffic and heavy construction equipment.
