The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a Student Assistant to assist in a wide range of services relating to the District 6 Design Unit/Program, in a training capacity, under close supervision by a Senior Transportation Engineer.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI Student Assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Engineering (All Disciplines), Mathematics, CAD, Technology, Computer Programming, or Construction Management.
Work Schedule
Flexible hours, Monday-Friday, from 7:00 am-5:00 pm, unless directed otherwise by supervisor or contact person. Minimum 16 hours per week for 1 year. May have more hours during summer / school breaks.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Possess and maintain a valid CA driver's license.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software including, but not limited to, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Basic working knowledge of mathematics, calculations, geometry, and computer aided design (CAD).
- Ability to:

- Work well with others in a team environment.
- Satisfactorily complete assignments.
- Produce neat, concise, accurate, and timely work.

Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of office equipment, like printers and fax machines.
- Moderate to advanced skills in Microsoft office, mathematics, CAD, or other engineering software.
- Excellent ability to compile, analyze, and monitor data.
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performing basic to moderate level mathematics and Microsoft Excel to collect, analyze, and calculate various types of information including, but not limited to, quantities, elevations, coordinates, and distances.
- Assist with collection and organization of existing utility information from encroachment permits and assist the project engineer in development of mapping for existing utilities and recording data in Microsoft Excel.
- Performing basic level Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Civil 3D design software and manual delineation on different media types for project plans, design drawings, displays, plots, and other mapping.
- Assist the Project Engineer with drafting using current guidelines and tolerances.
- Collecting and recording project field data acquired through field measurements utilizing various survey instruments and equipment.
- Assist the project engineer in collecting and documenting project data acquired through various existing project records including appraisal maps, as-built drawings, encroachment permits, and other project history files.
- Performing general entry level office duties such as preparing memos, meeting minutes, letters, and reports.
- Assist the unit with filing and organizing both electronic and hardcopy project files.
- Assist in scheduling meetings, faxing documents, making copies, and maintaining office and field equipment.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, scanners, and fax machines, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
80% of work is performed in an office environment.
20% of work may be required in the field.
