The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a Student Assistant to assist geospatial staff with the creation of various Geographic Information system (GIS) database(s) and Environmental Systems Research Institution (ESRI) mapping products including, but not limited to inputs or conversion of geospatial datasets, in a learning capacity, under the close supervision of the Senior Transportation Surveyor within the Office of Surveys. The geospatial Student Assistant works closely with other Caltrans staff to successfully complete various GIS projects; the incumbent also works collaboratively with Caltrans staff to define specific needs and workflows to successfully deliver GIS products that meet user needs.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Must have a good knowledge of GIS techniques and methodologies to develop data, tools, and models.
- Must have a good understanding of cartographic principles as applied to GIS products and delivery.
- Must have at least (4) four courses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Surveying, Database, Programming and/or an associated field.
- Must have completed (2) two courses of with Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.(ESRI) enterprise.
Preferred Qualifications
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
- ArcGIS Online GIS software products
- Familiarity with relational database design as it applies to GIS.
- Familiarity with computer-aided drafting (CAD) and the Global Positioning System (GPS).
- Basic knowledge of cartographic principles and spatial analysis.
- Ability to conduct simple research into GIS issues and products.
- Compiles, makes, or revises simple geospatial products, maps, charts, and diagrams.
- Working knowledge of Federal Geographic Data Committee accuracy standards.
- Working knowledge of: horizontal and vertical datums, coordinate systems, projections.
- Excellent ability to:
- Communicate effectively at a level required for successful job performance.
- Analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
- Prepare accurate reports in a timely manner.
- Follow standards and project development procedures by applying information from published manuals, memorandums, and other references.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilizes GIS software products (Such as ESRI's ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcGIS Online, ext.) and concepts of enterprise GIS infrastructure to assist in the input, development, compilation and deployment of GIS related products to users within Caltrans and the general public (as required).
- Assist in information exchange using database design concepts and business systems logic within a database platform, through an ESRI environment.
- Edits, and manipulates computer aided drafting and design (CADD) data products to incorporate into GIS workflow for enterprise usage.
- Provide testing and troubleshooting of products and services created by the GIS group and provide necessary recommendations for changes to ensure consistency.
- Provides basic assistance and presentations on database connections, ArcGIS server services and/or ArcGIS Online to associated departments and divisions.
- On an ongoing basis, continue knowledge and expertise in GIS technologies (ESRI, open source and others), document future technological changes which might impact Caltrans and provide written recommendations, best practices, and work-flows for enterprise GIS within Caltrans.

A GIS Intern is assigned to District 7 office in downtown Los Angeles but other day assignments could include anywhere in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Since the physical environment is directly linked to work assignments, any or all of the following conditions may be met:
- Frequent, substantial, or unexpected workload changes which can dictate rescheduling or reassigning of work as needed.
- Must be able to perform fine manipulation, keyboarding, and simple grasping in an office environment.
- Requires frequent sitting.
- Ability to lift objects of twenty-five pounds or less.
- May also be required to move large or cumbersome plans and diagrams from one location to another.
