Job Description

Why Charlie Health?

Young people across the country need our help. The sad reality is that a mental health crisis has taken hold of our most vulnerable population—leading to record levels of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and self-harm. From Manhattan to Montana, this reality is compounded by issues of access, both geographic and financial. The mental health landscape is systemically broken, and our young people are suffering as a result.

Charlie Health has set out on a mission to reimagine how high acuity care is delivered to young people and families in crisis. Our initial offering is a virtual intensive outpatient program, which places peers with similar mental health experiences and goals into customized virtual groups. Our team of masters-level clinicians lead groups multiple times per week to deliver a higher level of care.

Our goal is to help young people and families heal together. Through a combination of exceptional medical and psychological care, engaged community partnerships, and best-in-class technology, we provide an unparalleled approach to recovery support that serves individual needs in an integrated way. Join us in our mission to ensure that every young person—regardless of location or socioeconomic status—can get the care that they deserve.

About the Role

As the Engineer Manager for our Data Engineering team, you and your team will own execution of our data strategy. You will be responsible for building automated pipelines for data extraction, building and maintaining curated data models, and activating Charlie Health's data by developing bespoke integrations or utilizing a reverse ELT platform.

We're looking for someone who enjoys partnering with product development and business stakeholders to drive durable contributions and technical decisions while building a top notch team. You'll thrive here if you find greenfield work energizing, have a high quality bar, and take an iterative approach to impact.

This is a unique opportunity to impact millions of lives while building something from scratch, so we're looking for someone who is inspired by our mission and as excited about this opportunity as we are.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a player-coach for the data engineering team, teaching and guiding by getting your hands in the code and leading from the front.
  • Own your team's technical output and set the pace. Deliver high quality, performant, maintainable data platforms that drive meaningful business value in tight iterations.
  • Coach and mentor your engineering team. Identify and amplify strengths. Guide teammates through blockers and to long term professional growth.
  • Scale your team, with a focus on diversity, values, and impact.
  • Be an agent of alignment. Build consensus across and set strong patterns for our growing engineering department.
  • Partner with teammates across the organization to understand our business. Leverage that understanding to drive technical discussions and decisions.
  • Be an owner. Collaborate with Product, Analytics, and the rest of the business to iterate to best in class data solutions.
  • Identify bottlenecks and implement improvements to engineering processes, tools, and procedures. We're early and the expectation of folks joining at this stage is that you'll play a huge part in setting and improving how we work.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration and learning across engineering, product, and design team via mentoring, documentation, presentations, or other knowledge sharing methods.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of professional experience and 2+ years' of engineering management experience.
  • Significant professional experience directly managing data engineers or software engineers developing platforms or features that deliver meaningful business value.
  • Self directed attitude. You consistently drive your team to take solutions from ideas to production.
  • Great communication skills. Clear, concise, and able to communicate technical concepts to less technical partners.
  • Expertise and hands on production experience developing data infrastructure, building pipelines, and modeling data. Bonus points if you have experience with the tools we use: FiveTran, DBT, Dagster, Snowflake, Hightouch, and Tableau.
  • Excellent at managing ambiguity. Masterful ability to break down big, messy problems (demanding requirements, bugs, etc) into smaller parts with tractable solutions and clear iterations.
  • Experience making or contributing to important technical tradeoff decisions with cross team implications.
  • Growth mindset and a sense of humor. You welcome feedback and when you stumble, you get back up. You adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment and you enjoy fostering an environment that prioritizes fun, learning, and growth. #LI-Remote
  • Please note: candidates located within 75 minutes' commuting distance of our NYC office must abide by our hybrid policy (4 days in office, 1 day remote)

Charlie Health does not provide visa sponsorship.

90-Day Plan

In your first 90 days at Charlie Health, we anticipate you will:

  • Develop a 2024 data engineering roadmap and hiring plan, laying the groundwork for data science and machine learning capabilities.
  • Partner with your team to ingest claims data from our RCM system.
  • Automate operational workflows leveraging reverse ETL tools.
Benefits

Charlie Health is pleased to offer comprehensive benefits to all full-time, exempt employees. Read more about our benefits here.
Note to Colorado applicants: applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.

So—what do you think?

If you've made it this far, well, we're excited to meet you too. Just one more thing that we want you to remember: we pride ourselves on our meritocratic, performance-driven culture. There are lives on the line, and we have young people to save. There's no room for complacency. Your scope of responsibility and opportunity to make a difference will be uncapped at Charlie Health, but we need your commitment that you will work tirelessly for our patients, parents, and partners. At the end of day, our team is committed to helping you succeed at Charlie Health because when you succeed, our patients succeed, and we get one step closer to solving the mental health crisis. We're hopeful that this role will give you the experience to go and do whatever you want in life but the fulfillment to make you never want to leave our team. We look forward to solving the mental health crisis, together.
