SUMMARY: The Engineering Designer serves as a leader in the manufacturing and estimating process. Their role is to assist in developing customer value through interpretation of customer requirements and alignment with Jones Metal, Inc. processes by working closely with sales to communicate our capabilities to customers as well as develop new capabilities to meet customer request.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Prepares detailed drawings, solid models, programming files and specification sheets, along with a variety of calculations required to determine dimensions and tolerances, to enable the manufacture of parts which meet design requirements and customer specifications.
2. Verifies accuracy of drawings to ensure components meet manufacturability standards and customer design requirements.
3. Coordinates and collaborates with individuals in all departments of the company, fostering a high level of inter-departmental communication and cooperation, to ensure that established design criteria are clearly communicated, and engineering information includes all details necessary to manufacture products to customer specifications
4. Provides technical evaluations of ideas relating to development of prototypes, products or parts, and makes recommendations for desirable design changes in order to meet production standards at the most favorable cost.
5. Assists in the design of prototypes, to test design applications and to meet customer expectations.
6. Provides technical support to production personnel in connection with production of products, tools, dies and fixtures.
7. Evaluates requests for design changes in order to improve product quality and performance standards, and to reduce costs.
8. Works effectively with company personnel, vendors and customers to explain new or improved designs and ensure that established specifications are achieved.
9. Prepares routing and bills of material, based on completed drawings, and communicates with the purchasing department.
10. Prepares and maintains records of designs, engineering design changes, engineering design requests and copies of engineering drawings, to ensure accurate retrieval of repeat order drawings.
11. Maintains a high degree of confidentiality regarding company processes, customer product development, patents and other ‘company private’ information.
12. Participates in employee training with respect to departmental objectives.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra sufficient to perform engineering calculations.
• Excellent knowledge of engineering principles and nomenclature.
• Strong Mechanical aptitude.
• Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, welding, and metal forming processes.
• Ability to perform computer functions as they pertain to this job including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, and Global Shop Solutions, SolidWorks.
• Skilled at project management, from conception to manufacture of finished product.
• Ability to work independently to solve problems, organize and prioritize tasks.
• Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, with vendors, customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors, customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating or maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to understand and communicate in English to the extent necessary to perform all functions of the job.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Associates or Bachelors degree in engineering or technical program;
• Working knowledge of engineering principles including hydraulics, pneumatics, metallurgy, and strength of materials;
• Experience in metal fabrication highly favorable.
