This Metrology Engineer II full-time position will be based in our San Jose lab. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the GAF Energy R&D team who lead the research, development and innovation of next generation solar roofing. The engineer will have the opportunity to shape the decision making in the design of our next generation of modules and maintain our high standards for quality. We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated, naturally curious, and has a passion for solar energy, to join us in an environment where they will shape the design, manufacturing, and installation of an innovative and high quality solar panel.
What part will you play?
- The GAF Energy Solar R&D team is seeking a Metrology Engineer II to identify, develop and maintain cutting edge metrology that will provide key insight into our product from inception to installation and beyond.
- The candidate will work closely with the PV Characterization Engineer and within a cross-functional PV Laminate R&D Team to develop technology platforms and solar products that integrate seamlessly into roofs and deliver exceptional energy production at a competitive cost.
- The ideal candidate should be continually using and expanding the depth of their expertise and the breadth of their general science and engineering knowledge
- This person will also collect data, collate images, and present findings and conclusions to the laminate team and other stakeholders
- The ideal candidate must have a passion for thinking outside of the box, delivering innovative ideas and thriving in a fast-paced environment.
- This person will be part of the team that is responsible for conceptualizing, testing, developing and delivering high-volume, photovoltaic solar technology solutions that transform today's roofs.
What will you be doing?
- Metrology Development: Work with other team members to identify tools, either hardware and/or software, that can be deployed to gain valuable insight in various processes
- Testing: Design and execute test plans to validate the effectiveness of new and/or existing capabilities developed in collaboration with stakeholders in R&D, New Product Introduction, and Manufacturing
- Analysis: Contextualize the results from the experiments into the larger scope of the laminate's performance to highlight the tools' impact in the lab, the fab and/or the field.
- Communication: You will present concepts and results to your immediate Laminate Team and the larger GAF Energy stakeholders. You must be able to communicate clearly and effectively the results, its interpretation and implications.
What do we require from you?
- BS (or equivalent degree) in an engineering or related field (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Mechatronics, etc.) with 5+ years of professional experience; or MS (or equivalent degree) in an engineering or related field (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Mechatronics, etc.) with 2+ years of professional experience; or PhD (or equivalent degree) in an engineering or related field (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Mechatronics, etc.)
- Experience coding in Python (or at least one high-level coding language: Matlab, Java, C++, Julia, Octave etc.), including functional programming, object-oriented programming, and standard data analysis packages (pandas, numpy, matplotlib, request)
- Understanding of statistical data collection (uncertainty analysis, sample size calculation, sensitivity analysis) and knowledge of design of experiments preferred.
- Experience performing data analysis on times series and large data sets preferred
- Understanding of solar systems/devices at the cell and/or module level preferred
- Understanding of the functioning principles of machine learning and/or AI modeling, preferred but not required
- Knowledge of image processing and computer vision techniques is preferred, but not required.
- The Candidate must be able to work both as an individual contributor through hands-on work (indoor and outdoor), as well as a collaborative team member with other engineers and technicians.
- Strong communications skills in written, spoken, and graphical forms.
- Ability to think outside of the box and troubleshoot issues.
- Self-motivation and drive to take initiative and reach out to team members regardless of any perceived seniority.
- Ability and willingness to work in a cross-cultural, inclusive, and diverse environment.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally 15-20% of the time
Benefits and Compensation:
Individuals hired for this position can reasonably expect a base salary within the range of $115,000 - $140,000. The company provides comprehensive health and retirement savings plan benefits that support an employee's total well-being.
