Job description

Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Systems Science and Engineering Department leads the application of systems engineering and integration for developing strategic solutions to complex problems.

Our department is comprised of four technical groups: system dynamics and modeling, methods and analysis, systems engineering, and distributed energy systems and grid integration.

We are seeking a forward-thinking systems analyst/scientist who is interested in exploring a career as an Energy Supply Chain Researcher.

This position works a 9x80 schedule located in our REC facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho with every other Friday off.

Remote or Hybrid work opportunities may be available for this position.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support the mission of our department, leverage a strong combination of research, engineering, and operational skills through analysis, modeling and simulation, and integration of complex systems.

  • Evaluate alternatives, components, and technologies for enhanced system resiliency; evaluating risk and measures; developing and using dynamic simulation models.

  • Work with a diverse team of technical experts to support the success of multiple programs across energy science and technology, national and homeland security, and nuclear science and technology.

  • Perform efforts independently and in team environments.

  • Grow your leadership capability by actively contributing to research excellence through publications, software disclosure and proposal writing.

  • Demonstrate sound mentoring to post docs, interns, junior staff, and colleagues.

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English.

  • Possess a working knowledge of software tools and/or the skills to build tools to accomplish systems engineering tasks.

  • Balance the workload, which may include more than one project.  

  • Be flexible to adjust to overtime and travel when necessary to meet customer objectives.  

  • Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T)'s role and mission is to develop and advance clean, smart, and secure energy systems essential to national security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. 

  • It embodies science and engineering functions that contribute enabling technologies for today's national energy portfolio.

  • It also augments the country's technical ability to collaborate on and overcome critical energy and water challenges that already impact tomorrow's energy choices.

  • This position supports and integrates actions, activities, projects, & initiatives of the EES&T Directorate's Integrated Mission Plan and other INL research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) efforts.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Level 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Economics, Business or a related field.

  • Level 2: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Economics, Business or a related field, with at least 2 years of experience.

  • Pursuit of an advanced degree is highly recommended. Preferred work experience in Energy Supply Chain research.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistics, mathematics, programming, systems modeling or other quantitative field that can be used in operations research, management science and Supply Chain modeling.

  • Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills (in English)

  • Experience in computational analysis and model development using a range of systems modeling tools such as Discrete Event Simulation, System Dynamics, Agent-based Modeling, statistical analysis software, techno-economic analysis and life cycle analysis tools.

  • Developing good publication record in relevant fields of research

  • Proficient in Python or Java with experience in developing interfaces and machine learning tools

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" clearance.

  • Salary Grade 210 Min: $93,492 Mid: $123,852Max: $154,212
