A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST

As an Employment Specialist with our human services nonprofit, your day is jam-packed with opportunities to help customers achieve their employment goals and build the skills they need to thrive in the workforce. You begin your day by consulting with other staff to develop life skills, work readiness, and job retention training curriculums that are tailored to the needs of every client. Each day in this vocational rehabilitation role, you plan and create the materials needed for each class using textbooks, handouts, workbook information, and other sources. You facilitate life skills and work readiness groups, as well as coordinate and supervise independent job search activities, hiring fairs, and more. Assigning tasks to clients attending classes and tracking their progress is an essential part of your job. You use the Positions of Interest and Critical Competencies Form to monitor their performance. Your ultimate goal is to achieve monthly job placement goals by working closely with job developers and case managers to place customers in quality, long-term, unsubsidized jobs.

Because you are a job placement expert, you provide guidance on supportive resources and services, including Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Childcare Tax Credit (CTC), retention incentives, TANF disregards, and activities related to Work Participation Rate (WPR). You design and create recruitment strategies, such as hiring fairs, on-site employer visits, and info sessions, to attract potential employers and job seekers. Other responsibilities also include reviewing DHS-administered assessments, developing and amending Customers' Detailed Individual Responsibility Plans (DIRPs), and helping customers achieve their employment goals. You develop trusted working relationships with assigned TANF customers and monitor their engagement and progress up through their first year of employment. To ensure compliance with policies and procedures, you attend all required training and certifications as scheduled by our human services nonprofit. You are also responsible for capturing and recording employment information and working closely with customers to maintain and obtain job promotions and/or salary increases on the job. Diligently verifying and reporting all aspects of customer milestone achievements to DHS is also part of your job placement role.

You stress urgency and ownership, guiding customers through a learn-by-doing process during their service planning and delivery. With your eye for detail, you document activities, participation, compliance, and employment progress in the Electronic Case Management (ECM) systems and assist in compiling data for reports, including but not limited to customer timesheets and placement and retention reports. Participating in learning collaboratives through both regional and online conferences is an exciting aspect of your job, and you have plenty of opportunities to network with other professionals in the field. You are aware your role as an Employment Specialist is essential to helping customers achieve their goals and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. You thrive in this vocational rehabilitation position and love the happiness you experience by building strong relationships and changing clients' lives for the better through our human services nonprofit.
